He slid his pos car into the parking lot of the restaurant where Brit worked, a few minutes late and knowing from experience that "I'll get off around nine" could mean anything from her being done for an hour or her still running around, closing down her section. God he didn't miss food service. But she hadn't texted with a "Where the fuck are you" and the parking lot was packed, so he figured he had time to work with.
Knowing better than to go inside and act like a stalker, he turned off the car, shot off a text letting her know that he was chilling for whenever she was done, and reassuring there was no rush, and settled back to listen to the game on the radio. It was actually a perfect chance for him to catch up with fans on social media and respond to a few texts.
Fifteen minutes later, the door creaked open and Brit plopped next to him, groaning. "I know we said we were going back to your place, but can we please swing by my apartment? I smell like whatever the child's menu special was and really, that is not enticing for either of us."
JJ chuckled as he started the car. "Not a problem."
"God, I hate children. Worse, I hate the parents who don't pay attention to them."
Pulling into traffic, JJ slipped through the lanes toward Brit's place. "The perks of my profession. When we see kids, the parents are, by necessity, paying attention."
"Heh."
"Was it a decent night at least?"
"Eh. Broke even since it was mostly families with kids. On a fucking Saturday too. Don't these people have babysitters?"
"Apparently ... not." He smirked at her and she muttered obscenities at him under her breath - at least with a smile on her face - until they pulled up in front of her building. "Want me to come in or wait?"
"Come on in." She climbed out of the car. "That way if we decide to change our minds, you aren't out here like a dork."
He snickered and followed.
