The following is in response to the previous entry.
I can understand the uproar. If you watch the trailer, you get the idea that its aimed for kids( I think it has a pg 13 rating) and it tells you little to nothing about the book, and its overall theme. Phillip Pullman the author is a dedicated Atheist, and has stated in an interview a couple year back that his books are about killing god. If you don't know what the book is about, fucking read it, or look up a synopsis, but my point is this. If someone asked you what "The Wall" was about and you had never seen it let alone listened to any of Floyd's songs..could you tell them? NO! FUCKING NO YOU COULDN'T! Same rule applies. People are bashing this film for being too religious, or anti-religious, and they haven't even seen it yet. New Line has gone to great lengths to call the church the "Magesterium" which in fact is the term the Roman Catholic Church uses to describe its body charged with interpreting "the Word of God."
This however isn't the problem, even though most Christian groups are doing exactly what New Line had hoped they would do. They are giving them all the publicity in the world for everyone to see this film. I tried to find a decent Christian review that DIDN'T bash the film and boycott it, and I found only one. The guy had the right idea, he explained that we (and I mean we as they...as in Christians) must not boycott, or bash the film because it would give the false impression that we fear it. Other then that we must educate our younger Christians. They will not be able to see the changes that we adults would easily see. (This is stupid to me cause most adults wont see them either)
The letter goes on to explain that we educate ourselves. Only then would we learn and grow from understanding. If only most fanatical religious groups took this approach to more things in the world.
I'm not saying these people shouldn't fear what they might think is harmful to their children. This movie is laden with anti-religious themes. But is that the overall thesis to the story? Not at all. I cant wait to see it. I do wish it would be a bit more gory, and adult in some areas and with anything less then pg-13 it would reak with my discomfort. The books are nothing short of amazing in my humble opinion and worth reading. Fans of the book rival Tolkien's and even Rowlings. Its going to rock. But for the love of pete.....EDUCATE YOURSELVES. Nothing is worse then a bunch of people with crap coming out of their feeding holes about a film they haven't even seen yet!
