CHECKERED TAVERN: Grease fire suspected as cause of midnight blaze
Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal
Two people suffered injuries in a fire that caused extensive damage in their Checkered Tavern Road residence around midnight Saturday.
David Cooper, 35, of 2353 Checkered Tavern Road, attempted to extinguish the grease blaze. He was treated for extensive burns to his feet and hands by EMS and was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. Brittany Cooper, 22, was treated for smoke inhalation, minor burns, as well as becoming unconscious at the scene while in the care of EMS.
Fire Chief Fred Brown reported there was fire, smoke and water damage throughout the structure, as well as significant damage to the roof. The house belongs to Joshua Murphy.
Upon arrival, the sheriff’s patrol observed Cooper running into the residence which had visible flames coming from the structure. The deputies advised him to get out of the building and remain outside. Ublise, who was outside the home, was hysterical and screaming for the two pets that remained inside, according to the report.
The fire allegedly began while cooking inside the home. When the grease caught fire, Cooper attempted to extinguish the flames. However the attempt spread the flames to the wall setting the home ablaze.
Miller Hose and the Olcott Fire Department responded to the scene extinguishing the fire. However, the fire had already spread to the second floor and through the roof before it was finally put out.
There is no suspicious activity or foul play is suspected at this time, but fire investigators found approximately 18 to 20 marijuana plants in both the basement and the living room area. The marijuana plants were equipped with pots and lamps, and were roughly 4-8 inches high.
The Niagara County Drug Task Force collected the plants and took photographs of the scene. The owner of the marijuana is unknown. The NCDF will proceed with the investigation.
Hahaha. Cooper rules.
