FEAR, COWARDLY:
Perhaps the most familiar trait Gilbert is known for: his cowardliness towards things earthly and unknown. From his odd, often erratic fear of cats-to his deep, distorted phobia of being useless, lost-Gilbert is commonly the butt of all jokes from his canon mates and fans. Being an insecure, self-conscious man that he is, he is often expectant of things to belittle him, even when he frantically denies it all. Under the mercy of Oz’s cruel, mischievous behavior and command, Gilbert has become used to being under the heel of others, and while his maturity has lead him to his own beliefs and goals, he still shows the same insecurity that he carried with him as a child. It is uncertain what stemmed his intense fear of cats, although it is certain that he has feared them since childhood. His first initial reaction is to panic and hide, even going so far as to run away from a cat that may be approaching him. This fear is often seen as amusing to the fans and the people around Gilbert, and his castmates waste no time in torturing him until he pleads for mercy. This is the most comical phobia Gilbert holds, although Gilbert tends to take his fear in felines very seriously. Cats and teasing aside, the other fears rising in Gilbert’s mind are of a much darker nature, and they continue to make themselves evident throughout the series and throughout Gilbert’s life and journey into Pandora. His fear extends into several things all tying together with one similarity: loss. Gilbert makes his fear of losing Oz clear through each trial, and his attempts to keep that fear and reality at bay is threatened each time. We can see from the beginning that Oz himself ties together several of Gilbert’s anchors to reality- his purpose for being, his purpose for serving, as well as his purpose for controlling one of the most deadliest chains alive. Gilbert has situated Oz a place in his mind which is irreplaceable- a precious space, delicate and reserved-much like his own psyche. His protectiveness and loyalty to Oz is rooted to deeper crevices in Gilbert’s fears. More than anything, Gilbert fears a life without meaning- without use. Knowing nothing but uselessness since his childhood with Jack and Glen, Gilbert strived for a place near Jack-near his brother, near those who he could protect, and would eventually give him meaning. When the one position he has ever known becomes threatened, he questions himself-and even his loyalty towards Oz. The several attempts Gilbert has made to confront this fear tends to backlash into memories he’d rather not recall-we can assume these are Gilbert’s inner insecurities taking rise against any hope of overcoming them.
TROUBLED, PARANOID:
Along with Gilbert’s fears and insecurities, come more negative aspects of his mind that have made up most of his decisions and choices. Gilbert doubts himself, and everything about himself that he has put into place as Oz’s servant and as a member of the Nightray house. He doubts his abilities, his sense of self, and his loyalty to Oz. The lack of stability here often leads Gilbert to his own self-conscious demise, and his insistence to continue leaves little to heal. At times it seems as though Gilbert asserts himself and forces his protection onto Oz, moreso when Alice is brought into the picture. Gilbert’s almost natural resistance towards Alice is a hint of his paranoia and self-doubt in himself. He knows he can protect those around him, and he knows he can protect Oz, but during this time Gilbert often questions if he can continue to do so, and if he’ll be here to keep Oz safe. Questioning his powers comes naturally to Gilbert, as does questioning his worth in the world.
BRAVE, HEADSTRONG:
Doubt and fear aside, Gilbert is rarely seen as the brave and strong hero of the story. His bravery and courage are slivers of light easily shown in battle, and almost never revealed when he’s being bullied or insulted. Rarely does he defend himself in the midst of a tirade between him and Break, or even Oz, and rarely does he acknowledge his inner strength and courage in front of others-let alone himself. But time and time again, Gilbert has proven himself to be incredibly selfless in battle-rushing head in when danger makes itself known (unless cats are involved, wherein he’s more likely to pass out from fear). The blind ambition Gilbert excels in is partially due to his blind loyalty to Oz, which gradually becomes clearer as he and Oz continue their own personal journeys into the unknown. His instincts are to serve and protect, and that along with his ability to find and defend can be a force to be reckoned with. Being able to wield the chain Raven is also a sign of his bravery and determination, along with the purpose to continue his path alongside his companions. Gilbert is certainly no flashy hero, but his skills and gallantry can easily mistake him for one (at least to his female fans) but only his close friends can tell the differences apart. With Gilbert’s bravery comes his headstrong that reels in unexpectedly, at times. His courage comes at a price, which even Gilbert is usually unaware of-his impulsive need to protect. This can often be seen when he clashes heads with Alice, or takes the brute of Break’s insults. Nevertheless, it can be seen that Gil can lose sight of his goals when his ambition is in the way, and it takes more than an insult from Oz to keep his stubbornness down. His more shows of hot-hotheadedness are seen with his colleagues when they bicker, and they all take pride in fueling his flames on more than one occasion. These fits are not only subject to battle, but also to tantrums and fights Gil often gets into. His defensive, self-conscious nature is the target of bullying all around, and Gil does very little to manage without Oz interfering. His temper accelerates as the insults grow more personal, such as when one questions his ability to protect or fight-or even his self-reliance for himself. His resistance against the teasing is very low, which usually sparks his fuse that eventually leads to an outburst or even a strike to the head. It can be seen as a comical view of Gilbert, and it can be seen as a window to more personal vendettas against himself. Nonetheless, it’s a part of Gilbert that mostly everyone has grown accustomed to.
KINDNESS, DEVOTION:
Gilbert is not without his moments of understanding and kindness. We have seen the darker side of Gilbert’s devotion, but there is also an innocence to it that can easily be seen when Jack Vessalius comes into the picture. It can take a lot to bring out the content nature of Gilbert’s usually chaotic persona, but when seen it is almost like a different portrait of the “useless” man we know. Gilbert knows his limits by asserting himself, and occasionally over-asserting himself. With his ambition comes his understanding to his own devotion and happiness he brings to Oz. As a child he was frightened and considerably confused as to how to make another person happy. As he matured, he knew more about Oz than Oz possibly knew in that moment, and it shows as he follows and listens to Oz, when the time comes for it. He is constantly kind to Oz, his Master and his friend from the past. When he is not tolerating his teasing or insulting, he is looking out for Oz as a silent protector all around. Gil displays subtle affection shown only to Oz, such as a pat on the head or a hand on the shoulder. It is not that Gilbert doesn’t know affection-merely, he has known to work for it, and with Oz, it comes naturally. Gilbert is shyly reserved at times, and with Oz he can easily display this kindness that very few have known-even his brother, Vincent. His devotion and kindness are often mixed in, unhealthily so, but at times he has even shown this soft side to Alice. As a result, Alice has come to depend on him, and has branded him as her own as she did with Oz. Gilbert’s antics and tantrums aside, he’s learned to live with them and to reach out to them, in his own quiet way. At one point he has possibly displayed his own type of affection to his friends, but the extent of it only goes so far. Gilbert knows and feels kindness and consideration, and whether or not it is misplaced is something many do not realize, not even Gilbert himself. Gilbert has been taught to know patience since his time with Oz as a child, and even know he is learning as he deals with Alice’s rambunctious personality from time to time. When Gilbert is not head-first in a fight or trying to defend himself, he can absorb in information in his own way. He was almost forced to know patience when looking out for Oz, and he held that with him until he grew, and continues to grow.

A wheeze. Gilbert's chest heaved up in a slow, sharp intake of shuddering air. It cascaded down his throat, into his windpipe, and his eyes flickered up above his lids. His hand, usually clad in cloth, dragged itself down his face and into the dark trenches of his hair. "A dream," He said, soundlessly, and repeated: "Just a dream." He tiredly lifted his torso from the bed and squinted in the dark to see the shadows form in the corners of his room. The nightstand, the arch of the lamp, and the coil of his coat laying helplessly on the floor. He could feel the indent of his gun from the corner of his pillow, and with a slow swipe found it there, laying more peacefully than he ever could.
It was text book. Slipping the pack from his pocket, Gilbert inhaled the first grateful taste of his cigarette and allowed the flavor to follow him outside. He thinly blew out, expression recoiling into exasperation at the mingle of night air and nicotine. He thought, first, that he should check on Oz, who should be sleeping soundly in the room next to his. He could almost hear Alice's small, periodic snores and gurgles in the very same room, and figured maybe just another minute wouldn't hurt. Another minute as he let his usually narrow gaze expand out into the bleak horizon-- a nothingness which melted deep into the black of the forest and the lasting blue of the night.
It didn't take long until the uneasiness settled in. The uncomfortable settle in his stomach that rested there like a dull weight, waiting to be lifted up into his chest. He convinced himself that Oz was fine, they were all fine-- and that he could stay out here, for a minute more. His worry from earlier had not completely dissipated, but Oz had assured him -- always assuring him-- and as always, Gil was uncertain. They would be heading to Yura's mansion tomorrow, and tomorrow...
Gil inhaled, blew out, and shook his head. He could not even manage a humorless chuckle. Not even a worry-laden sigh. He stood, put out his cigarette, and stepped quietly into the next room to check on the two. Tomorrow would come, but at least tonight was just a dream.
