I guess doctors take the sabbath off, at least at Children's Hospital where they don't work Saturdays.
I don't know if I've heard any hilarious excuses as to why someone couldn't complete a job. I remember doing summer stock theatre, some of our cast was 7th Day Adventists and so while the rest of us were doing horrifyingly boring promotional work, they got the day off for religious reasons. But it's hard to fault that. I suppose calling in sick the day after Pride is a bad excuse, but I'm sure people all call in sick. I can't think of any excuses I have given alas aside from standard ones...
