“Sandburg! You will climb into the tree! Now!”
“Why has it always to be me, Jim?”
“Because you don’t have so much weight like me.”, was the logical answer he got.
“Oh, I see! Always the short people! And what about my Acrophobia?“ Sandburg was standing there with his arms in front of his chest and pouting.
“Oh come on, Blair! Don’t behave like a little child! It isn’t so high! Get that damn cat out of the damn tree! Now!” Jim barked angry and pointed up to the little black and mewling something above them in the crone of the old walnut tree.
“It’s a tomcat, Uncle Jim!” The little girl standing next to the arguing men was sobbing.
“What?” Jim Ellison asked a little bit confused and leant down to his eight years old niece Sarah.
“Morty is a tomcat, not a cat.” Sarah sniffled and rubbed her eyes and her nose with the right sleeve of her winter jacket.
“Oh, right! I get what you mean.” Jim said softly and smiled.
“Okay, I will get that unlucky tomcat out of the tree - again!” Blair let out a deep sigh and waited for Jim to lift him up.
“Thanks, Sandburg. You are the best!” Jim whispered into Blair’s ear, gripped him with both hands from behind at the side at the hips and raised him in the height.
“And don’t you dare to forget that after all what I have done for you tonight!” Sandburg giggled so softly only Jim did hear it.
But Blair already had difficulties at the first branch in holding himself tight. The snow on this was frozen and the thick gloves didn't make the task easier for him at all either. He slowly worked his way forward to the tomcat. And the branches got thinner and thinner.
“Hey, little buddy! … I almost got you! … Stay there, kitty!” The long haired man talked softly to the black mewling animal.
But Morty didn't want to sit and wait and so he climbed further up.
// Oh this damn silly tomcat! When does this one finally learn it? I had him fetched down two times now! -- two times! //, Sandburg cursed inwardly.
The tomcat could not move any more back now. Blair had to make only another step and to extend his hand to get Morty.
“Careful, Chief!” Jim shouted up to him.
But in the second when Blair put his foot on the next branch, this one gave way and finally broke under his weight.
With a loud shout he felt into the depth. It was only the fast reaction and a hasty step of Jim that he didn't land on the hard ground but in the strong arms of his partner. But Jim couldn’t keep his balance any more. He fell backward into the soft snow and Blair -- with his face to him -- landed on his chest. The two men saw each other deep in the eyes and blushed.
“Thanks you.", produced Blair quietly.
"You're welcome, Chief! But could you go down from me now, please?" Jim smiled gently and nodded significantly in Sarah's direction. Sandburg saw from his eye angles that the little girl watched them quite exactly and grinned mischievously.
"Uncles Jimmy and uncles Blair are in love!" The girl giggled quietly.
"Oh Sarah! Please!" Ellison sighed quietly and rolled his eyes. "Sandburg! Down from me! Now!" Jim growled at his friend and shoved him away.
“Ahem, yes, right!”, answered Blair and stood up. Then he stretched out his hands and helped Jim to stand up too.
When they had knocked of the snow from themselves they heard the mewling from the black kitten above them in the tree.
"Morty!", Sarah called. The girl extended her arms, the animal jumped and two seconds later the little runaway purred safety in the embrace of his girl again.
"Oh man!" Blair sighed and rolled his eyes.
"See! This is what I would call a perfect landing, Sandburg!" Ellison grinned. "You still have to practice a bit more, I think."
"Oh, and I already exactly know where and with whom it will be!" Blair smiled and gave him the answer so quietly that Sarah couldn't hear it.
"Count on it, my little fallen angel!" Jim laughed and rubbed a handful of snow into Blair’s wonderful curls.
"Hey!" Sandburg gave Ellison a slight push with the elbow into his ribs.
The evening was saved. Jim's niece had got back her tomcat. A light wind arose and it smelled out of the house after special day roasts with dumplings.
"What took you so long, guys? The meal is getting cold and William and Steven argue over who may cut the turkey!" Naomi called. She stood in front of the entrance shivering lightly from the cold.
Blair and Jim looked at each other and grinned. What an evening!
"Well, we better get in there before the two will duel themselves with forks and knifes!" Jim laughed, put an arm around Sarah's shoulders, the other one around Blair and went back with them into the house.
