Summary: Hibari is watching something from a distance, when he gets a visitor
Author's Notes: I kind of regret doing this, because now I have the world blooming in my mind. Silly AU. It wasn't supposed to take on a life of it's own.
There was a crowd around a dark cherry casket. A sea of black and white, with faces all painted in the shade of pain. Several women stifled their cries, handkerchiefs raising to blot at their mascara stained faces. Yet in the background stood a strong, lone figure watching the aftermath of a train wreck everyone saw was coming and did nothing to stop. The kind heart in the casket accepted his death like it were his destiny, and broke the hearts of those around him for it.
Even his.
It was an absurd annoyance that made him feel weak and exploited for. After many years of watching the Vongola Boss' growth, of watching the herbivore become something more; Hibari felt foolish for actually coming to follow someone who stupidly and gracefully threw his life away. And as he watched from a distance as Sawada Tsunayoshi was lowered into the ground, his anger grew immensely. Hibari wanted to bite that idiot to death.
"I knew you would come, Kyoya."
Sharp blue-gray eyes drifted from the scene that was greatly annoying him, to look at the Don of another family. Hibari didn't greet him with words, merely tolerated his presence and watched the way the slight breeze blew at blond locks for a moment.
"You're predictably unpredictable in your old age." Dino smiled, lines crinkling around his soft brown eyes. They betrayed his own age.
Hibari snorted faintly. "You're still annoying in yours."
"Touche." Dino laughed, though the sentiment died in his throat as he looked down toward the remaining loitering mourners. "It's a shame what happened, but I hear it was to protect his family."
"If for nothing else, he would have died in vain." Hibari muttered, showing a moment of his heart to someone who would have seen through him, no matter the bravado. "Herbivore."
Maybe it was the cemetery and it's peacefulness, or maybe it was watching the twin girls and young boy being ushered into a black limousine by their mother that did it; but somehow all the annoyance he'd felt over Sawada's death started to loose it's potency. At least for the time being. Age had taught him one thing: to pick and choose his battles. Sawada's children had more right to be angry, and he realized it.
Without warning, Hibari spun on his heel and started off toward his own awaiting car. He didn't care to say goodbye to his uninvited company, nor did he care to hear it in return. Yet he knew that the damn Cavallone would say something. It would be unlike him to stay quiet.
"Kyoya," Dino's voice carried in the wind to his ears. "Don't do anything stupid."
"Keep your concern to yourself." Hibari carelessly and calmly stated before disappearing into the back seat of a sleek black car. Just as the cloud always was, it was solitary and alone. Freely floating by it's own rules. The Cavallone Don would never stop him, and never could.
Those children he'd actually grown fond of would be his only irrational decision.
