I think it would be interesting if John got 'supernatural powers' and had a match up against the demon. That would be wicked cool!

I thought John himself said in DMB that sunlight didn't really hurt them? They could pretty much be out and about, from what I saw in the episode.
Hm. You know, I personally thought it wasn't really clear from canon. Yeah, John said it hurts like a bad sunburn, and we saw Luther step outside for a few moments and he wasn't burned to a crisp, so...on the other hand, when the Winchesters ran out of there during the day, the vampires didn't exactly pursue them, either. If they wanted them that badly, and the sun wasn't that much of a risk to them, why not pursue?
And we also don't know from canon how bad this 'sunburn' is, or how long it takes to heal when the vampires get one. So all in all, I just figured it was easier to write it as if sunlight is something they avoid if they can, but it's not deadly if they get caught in it. *shrug*
