Logopolis picspam - episode 2

Jan 07, 2010 23:54

After a messy start, this story finally begins to get off the ground in its second episode, and the scale on which it does so more than makes up for its shaky beginnings. As a result of this, I ended up taking almost twice as many screencaps this time round, so please bear with me! :)

When we last saw the Doctor, he was being arrested.

"Now if you'll just help me to create a diversion..."

Adric to the rescue!

In a sudden attack of usefulness, Adric takes the bicycle lying by the TARDIS and pretends to have been run over. This distracts the policemen long enough for them both to hop into the TARDIS to safety.

They attempt to dematerialise, but the Master's TARDIS is weighing the ship down...

"Adric... I'm going to jettison Romana's room."
"Are you sure?"
"This is life, nothing's sure."
"I'm sorry, I just-"
"Do you want a quick decision or a debate!?"
"Sorry!"

This is a beautiful little scene. Unable to face up to having a constant reminder of Romana on board, the Doctor takes the opportunity to dispose of it, once again running away from his problems (at least, that's how it reads for me - there must be dozens of other rooms he could have left behind instead). Also, I always like to see a bit of anger aboard the TARDIS! Travelling with an egotistical alien is not all fun and games.

Anyway, this lightens the load enough for the TARDIS to dematerialise properly, and by the time the police get the door open, there's nothing but an empty police box left behind. (Aside: Does this mean both police-box-shaped TARDISes were parked on top of a real police box? That's a lot of Pull To Open in the one place.)

"There's got to be a trick to this, Davies."

Random character naming FTW!

Tegan, meanwhile, has found her way to the pretty part of the TARDIS (the Cloisters?).

Just after she sits down to take a rest, the Master's TARDIS appears, but I'm afraid I forgot to cap that part... *hides*

The Doctor has received a message from Traken: confirmation that the Master has, indeed, escaped, and has taken over Tremas's body.

"He must have known I was going to fix the chamaeleon circuit!"
"He read your mind?"
"He's a Time Lord! In many ways we have the same mind."

Bring on the slash, wooooo! :D
Also, more shouting at Adric for no reason, I approve.

The Doctor then has a very strange idea - he's going to park the TARDIS underwater and open the door, thereby flushing the Master out. ...Okay.

"We must have touched bottom!"
"Touched bottom?"

I admit, I giggled quite a lot at this. :p

They brace themselves for the impending water pressure...

...and nothing happens.

"I thought there'd be a perfectly simple explanation!"

The Doctor then spots the Watcher on a nearby bridge, and goes to have a chat with him.

"Nothing like this has ever happened before."

In the Cloisters, Tegan is still lost, and being menaced by the Master's TARDIS, lots of evil laughter and strange camera angles.

All her attemps to escape lead her back to the same spot...

"Round and round like a hamster in a cage!"

The Doctor has returned from his chat with the Watcher, and sets the coordinates for Logopolis, despite having the Master still on board.

"I've just dipped into the future. We must be prepared for the worst."

Logopolis! I have to say, I love this planet, and its little ascending scale motif.

The Doctor casually informs Adric that he intends to leave him behind on Logopolis. Before he has time to react, Tegan finally finds her way to the console room.

This rather perturbs the Doctor, and there is some slight upset; however, when he realises Tegan's Aunt Vanessa was one of the Master's victims, he declares that she has no choice but to come with him. I'm not sure why.

"Woman in the white hat, red sports car?"
"You've seen her?"
"Well, a little of her."

*facepalm*

Yay, it's the Monitor! I love this guy.

The TARDIS crew get a warm welcome from the assembled Logopolitans - the Doctor and the Monitor are clearly BFFLs. Note the rather strange looking tree in the background.

The Monitor takes the Doctor to their new radio tower to obtain the codes he needs for his chamaeleon circuit.

My new teknologies, let me show u them!

Meanwhile, the Master realises that his TARDIS looks silly.

The Monitor intones the measurements into his computer...

...and the city gets to work on the Doctor's code.

Sadly, the startlingly unobservant Logopolitans make easy targets for the Master's Tissue Compression Eliminator.

Back in the control room, Tegan is given an off-screen explanation of what's going on, and the Monitor delivers his results to the Doctor, with only a hint of smugness.

On his way out, the Doctor suddenly remembers what the control room reminds him of.

It's a copy of the Pharos project computer room on Earth, created from pure mathematics through the complicated discipline of Block Transfer Computation. The Doctor is impressed.

"Structure is the essence of matter, and the essence of structure is mathematics."
"Wh- You can model the Pharos project mathematically?"
"Of course. And supply the necessary raw energy."
"...You could model any space-time event in the Universe!"
"That is true. Now, shall we implement the solution to your little problem, Doctor?"

Aw, Monitor. ILU. You're so happy with your maths.

They head back to the TARDIS, and on the way the Doctor stops the Monitor and asks him to look after 'Adric and the girl' for him while he carries on alone.

"Monitor... I must ask you a very special favour."
"My dear Doctor, of course."

If my OTP wasn't in this episode, I'd be getting a bit suspicious about these two.

The Doctor slams the door in Adric and Tegan's faces, quite literally - he hates farewells.

Monitor to the rescue!

"But he said he was expecting danger!"
"I must admit that I misled the Doctor in order to have the pleasure of your company. Now, perhaps you would like to see more of Logopolis?"

<3

At this point, Nyssa turns up from nowhere.

They only have time for the briefest of introductions when something starts to happen to the Doctor's TARDIS...

"I don't understand! I don't understand!"

WHY IS THE MATHS NOT WORKING D:

The Doctor's TARDIS has shrunk!

I'm not entirely sure where the end of this episode is - I watched it in a big feature-length edition with the ending titles cut out - but I refuse to let it end without at least one shot of the Master, so on we go!

The tiny TARDIS is adorable, I want one.

And lo and behold, hiding in an alcove, look who it is....!

:D

"At last Doctor... at last I've cut you down to size!"

And so episode 2 of Logopolis ends on a much more suspenseful note than its predecessor (wherever in the final minutes the ending actually was). The Doctor is imprisoned in a tiny TARDIS, and the flawless codes of the Logopolitans have been sabotaged, and best of all, the Master is involved! And Nyssa has turned up, for some reason! This is really getting exciting. :)
