why rec'd?: I adore Sheppard back stories, especially back stories that explore the origins of Sheppard's Ancient gene. This story handled those origins wonderfully and realistically, with Sheppard so very Sheppard through it all. But what I loved the most was Sheppard's personal definition of family.
