Speaking for the Dead Why this must be read:
This is an incredibly moving look at a John Sheppard who holds out for rescue with the help of his ghosts. I adored the look Kriadydragon provided for us at each ghost's relationship with John, from the loving mother to the supportive friend to the stern and harsh support of a commanding officer. Aspects of this piece made me weep (like where Sumner's granddaughter was mentioned), but by the end, I was pumping my fist in triumph when John was finally rescued. We even got to see occasional spots of dark humor in Peter's response to "What do the dead say?". :) So take a gander at John and his ghosts. You'll love the man and the Atlantis lost all the more for it.
Story Summary: "What say the dead?"
The next march to the next camp heralds the return of Sumner and his condescending trash-talk.
“My three year old granddaughter can walk better than you.”
Guilt pierces sharp, thudding John's heart and sagging his shoulders. Either the dead can read minds or Sheppard's an open book; Sumner's features soften.
“You did what you had to, Sheppard,” he says, then looks at John, stern yet gentle. “So stop thinking about it. I can make it an order if you want.”
It doesn't seem right that the dead should be making him feel better, and it freaks Sheppard more than talking to the man he'd killed.
