Why this must be read: I usually don't read pre-series fic or fic where a canon pairing occurs far earlier than established, but this fic is amazing. Sam and Jack have a one night stand before he leaves for the first Abydos mission. Annerb does an amazing job characterizing pre-series Sam and Jack - Sam with a huge chip on her shoulder and a load of bitter resentment, and Jack, looking forward to his way out of this world, literally and figuratively. I love how Sam manages to crack Jack's shell without even trying, and how Jack realizes that maybe today isn't a good day to die.
He’s huddled in a dark cave on Abydos when Dr. Daniel Jackson tells him it’s a fucking shame he’s so ready to die.
For the first time, he thinks maybe it is.
