Why This Must Be Read:  Set pre-series in Iraq, this story offers an alternate first meeting for our Jack and Daniel, when Captain Jack O'Neill and a small group of American military men are joined in their squalid prison by a very young and idealistic Daniel Jackson.  The author does an amazing job of portraying the Jack we saw in the original Stargate movie, one in bleak despair and closed off from the rest of the world, and a Daniel facing his own desperate situation with his own individual brand of courage, intelligence, and ability to touch people in ways that matter.  And, in so doing, the author reaffirms the authenticity and uniqueness of the connection between Jack and Daniel by perfectly capturing it here, just under different circumstances.  The pace, the structure, and the language choices all add to the emotional resonance here, and whether you leave the story believing these two men will meet again years later when a Stargate is found or believing they won't, you'll feel the compromises Jack makes, every moment in every day, whether they cost or whether they re-pay.

Author's Summary:  "Jack's fast succumbing to darkness and despair as an Iraqi POW, until hope arrives in the form of an unlikely savior."
