AN: Here is a short little story that I wrote when I was originally here in the fandom back in 2003

"Hey Danny," Jack said as he stood in the door of Daniel's office. "Oh, hi Jack," Daniel responded, a hint of uncertainty that only Jack would have ever been able to catch lacing the younger man's voice. His archeologist was looking at him now, a question in his cerulean eyes. It had been too long since Jack had come to see his friend, too long since they had been close in a way that didn't warrant any words, and now he was finally starting to miss his "flaky on a good day" archeologist. He was starting to miss the friendly banter that had been so much a part of their relationship, the long nights of pizza and beer, and arguing over whether or not to watch a documentary on Ramses II, or hockey. All these thoughts flying through his head, Jack was vaguely aware that Daniel was waiting for him to say something, but for the life of him, he didn't know what. Finally though, he got his head in order and made up his mind about what he was going to do, and he spoke.

"So whatcha doin' for..." he started to say Christmas, but he didn't even know if Daniel, who had spent half of his life in the Middle East and other faraway places even celebrated Christmas. The younger man had certainly never mentioned any religious preferences, and their job definitely put a new perspective on what religion was, anyway. With some regret, he realized that this only leant itself to the fact of how little Jack knew his supposed friend. "The holiday break," he finally said, wincing at how lame his words came out. Again his archeologist regarded him slowly, but this time there was a thoughtful look on his face.

"I guess I was just planning on catching up on some reading. I just want to enjoy some peacefulness without having to worry about saving the world." The last part was meant to be a joke, but it came out bitter. In fact, the whole thing had had an edge of bitterness that made Jack wince in silent sympathy. He would not belittle his friend with sympathy. Daniel was one of the strongest people he knew.

Again, almost unconsciously, Jack was speaking, "Well I was planning on heading over to my cabin in Minnesota for the week, why don't you come with me...there is already snow on the ground there...I..." he stopped, looking at his friend pleadingly. Daniel had that thoughtful look on his face, and Jack could practically see the wheels turning in his head. He looked as if he was about to say 'no', seemed to reconsider, and then nodded.

"Okay, Jack. When do we leave?" Jack, startled by the answer looked at him blankly for a moment, before smiling brightly; he was fully prepared for rejection, and the affirmative answer sent a wave of hope through him. Maybe this could be their chance to start their friendship on the mend.

"I'll pick you up at your apartment at 0800 tomorrow morning." He told the younger man, who groaned, but nodded. "

~~~~~
It had been a very long day. Jack had led Daniel to the air force base in Colorado, before he had flown them both in a small plane to Minnesota. He had been somewhat amused at the fact that, after all the things they had faced together over the last couple of years, Daniel had been slightly afraid of getting into a plane with him, at least with him as the pilot. Now, however, they were there, or almost. They had about another five minutes of driving before they reached Jack's small cabin situated deep in the woods of Minnesota.
"I am glad you decided to come with me, Daniel," Jack said quietly, regarding his friend for a moment, before turning his eyes back to the road.
"I needed a break, Jack. I'm.....tired." A small smile graced the younger man's features, "It gets old, you know? I just wanted to go somewhere away from everything, away from the world...and...I guess this seemed like a good place." Jack was touched by the younger man's words, and he smiled.
"It is definitely a good place for relaxing." He replied quietly. "Nothing or no one for miles.”
They didn't say anything else until they pulled into the driveway to the cabin, where they both began to busily unpack their things from the truck, shivering slightly as the cold air blew around them. Finally, they managed to get inside with their things where Jack preceded to put everything into place while Daniel began to work on a fire. Soon, the Cabin was filled with a warm glow, and heat began to spread throughout the rooms.
"Here," Jack said, moving to help Daniel remove his heavy coat, which he hung up near the fire to dry.
"Thanks...So, this is it huh? This is where you kept threatening to take Sam?" Jack studied him a moment, then nodded, a smile flitting across his face and shining in his eyes.
"It's....nice?" The words were a question, and Jack could tell Daniel was trying to come up with some kind of suitable complement.
"Don't worry about it, Danny." Jack said, deliberately using the pet name that Daniel only ever seemed to allow him to use. Daniel just nodded at him and began to wander around the cabin, long slim fingers tracing the grains of wood along his way. First, he made his way to the kitchenette, then to the bedroom and finally back again.
"Umm....Jack?"
"Yep?"
"Jack, there is no bathroom, and there's only one bed." A frown had creased Daniel's forehead now, and Jack couldn't resist laughing.
"Umm....yeah....about that....The outhouse is right outside the backdoor, and I was planning on sleeping on the couch." Again the younger man regarded him before shaking his head.
"You are not sleeping on the couch. Not with your bad knees and this cold weather."
"I'll live."
Daniel stared at him and shook his head. "I'll sleep on the couch," he finally said, eyes set and determined, his renowned Jackson stubbornness showing head.
"How about a compromise?" Jack finally suggested with a small snicker, "Why don't we share the bed, It is a king sized bed and it can easily sleep both of us. Besides, it is not like we haven't shared a tent before."
Daniel seemed to consider this, and then he nodded, "Okay." An awkward silence quickly seemed to fall between them as they stood there in the living room, a seeming eternity between them. Then they both spoke at once,
"Jack, I..."
"Daniel I'm..." They both stopped and laughed and the moment was gone, everything was like it used to be with the easy laughter and quiet comfort that they only got from the other’s presence. "So, ya hungry, Daniel?" Jack said as he moved to the kitchenette and began unpacking some premade sandwiches, "It's not exactly gourmet, but I don't really feel like cooking. Now sleeping though, sleeping I can definitely do here soon..." He flashed the younger man a wry smile, "shutting up now." Daniel just laughed, his head automatically turning slightly to the side to hide the grin that had spread across his face. And Jack caught his breath. Daniel standing there...Daniel was strangely charming wearing a pair of tight jeans that accentuated long legs, and a grey sweater that made his eyes seem more blue than Jack ever remembered them. The moon light streaming through the window, and as it reflected off of the blanket of snow outside seemed to highlight him, and yet, at the same time, throw him into shadows. Daniel truly was a breathtaking site to behold. He was all light and shadow, not one more than the other, but both at the same time. Was it wrong to think of his friend like this? Of another man as beautiful?
"Jack..." Daniel whispered coming closer, close enough for the older man to smell his aftershave.
"Daniel, I..." He stopped and moved closer so that their mouths were only inches apart. He was going to kiss Daniel, he just had to move forward a few inches and then....There was a loud crash outside and they both jumped back at the same time. The moment, like the awkwardness before, was gone. Well and truly. With a sigh, Jack went outside only to realize that the noise had come from some sort of animal knocking the trash cans down, but maybe, he realized, it was for the better. He had been about to kiss his best friend, his very male best friend.
When he went back inside, Daniel was sitting on the couch, a sandwich in his hand, and another one waiting patiently for Jack, resting on a plate on the coffee table.
"Thanks," he said as he plopped gracelessly on the couch and picked up his dinner, along with a beer that had been set out for him.
"Welcome," Daniel responded, almost automatically.
"Ya know Daniel, I am sorry."
"Sorry, for what, Jack?"
"Sorry for pushing you away, for taking this...," He pauses and gestured around, "this being together, away from us. You are the best friend I have ever had, and you deserve more than being treated like dirt and then having salt rubbed into your wounds..."
"Jack!" Daniel hissed, "Jack stop, I...I don't hold it against you." Daniel's voice was soft, and Jack could see the pain in his eyes, he could tell he had hit the spot exactly. He had run away from his friend, had left him in pain, and then only come back to rub salt into already bitter wounds. Even worse than all of that though, was that not only had he walked away, he had taken Sam and Teal'c with him. He was the Colonel after all, while Daniel was only a civilian and an archeologist, and someone who should never have known the pains of battle.
"No more Danny. You're strong, the strongest person I have ever known, but sometimes, even you aren't strong enough, especially when it has to do with," he placed a tentative hand over the younger man's heart.
"Jack..." He was unable to say anything as a finger was pressed over his lips.
"Shhh Danny." They stared at each other for a long moment, and then the urge to kiss his friend, his archeologist and geek, overtook him. He needed to do it, he needed to know, and he needed Daniel to know. Slowly, so slowly, he pulled the younger man toward him, ignoring the surprised sound that his companion made, and then he pressed their lips together in a chaste kiss. Instantly Daniel pulled back, startlement and hurt shadowing his eyes.
"Jack, I...I'm not gay," he floundered for words as he began to tremble slightly.
"I know, I'm not either, but somehow I love you, you make me feel...I don't know. You can tell me to stop and I will, but God help me, I want you. If you turn me down I’ll understand. I’m not worried about our friendship either way, I just won't lose you again, friend or otherwise." Daniel stared at him in shock, and his trembling became somewhat more obvious, at least to Jack's trained eyes.
"Love me?" The younger man's voice was barely a whisper.
"Yes."
"Jack I…don't know. I have to think..."
"Take all the time you need Danny, my Daniel." The younger man just smiled faintly, sadly, at him, before curling deeper into the couch, his brow furrowed in deep though.
They both sat that way for what easily could have been hours, before a sloppy grin spread across Jack’s features. He was done with passive.
"Hey Danny, c'mon."
"Jack, where? What?" He said in surprise as he was pulled bodily off of the couch, almost falling forward, though strong arms held him firmly upright.
"Let's go play in the snow!"
"The snow? Jack?"
"Sure, why not?"
"Why not?! He asks. Because it is damn cold out there Jack. It has to be below zero!"
"And your point would be?"
"My point is that you're insane."
"Are you just now figuring it out Danny?"
"No," Daniel grumbled bitterly as he allowed himself to be pulled to the door where Jack had to dress him. There was no way in hell that he was going out into the snow willingly. When they did finally get outside Jack instantly went to the ground where he began work on packing the snow into a small ball which he lifted up, as if examining it. Daniel knew better, however, and his eyes widened when he realized what his Colonel had in mind. "Oh no Jack, no way in hell are we gonna have a snowball figh...humph" He gaped at the older man as freezing snow stung his face and seeped down his body, making him shiver. "Oh, you are so gonna pay for that Colonel!" he hissed as he quickly took cover behind a large pile of fire wood and began frantically making his snowballs, ducking away from the odd oncoming ball that managed to make it past his makeshift fort. When he was satisfied with his number of snowballs, he carefully picked one up in a gloved hand, aimed and threw. The snowball hit Jack hard, and more snow then the other man would have liked leaked under his jacket.
Now Daniel was gonna be the one to pay.
Slowly Jack began to sneak to Daniel's supposedly hidden safety. He was in full blown Colonel Mode and he knew the younger man would never hear him. Finally, he got within feat of his prey, and in a carefully calculated move, he tackled his friend onto his back.
"Jaaack!" Daniel hissed, as he struggled to get himself up. Jack had to admit that Daniel was good. He had certainly learned a lot from his time in the army, as he managed to almost free himself, landing a couple of well aimed attacks on Jack's body, unfortunately, Jack was still better. Finally Daniel sagged against the cold floor, a small, too sweet smile on his face. Instantly, the older man felt wary. That look on his archeologists face always meant he had something up his sleeve. Daniel would gave him that exact look when he was about to pull some move in chess that was guaranteed to give him a win. Daniel began to struggle again, when suddenly he hissed in pain, his eyes going wide.
"Oh shit Daniel, are you okay!" he said, instantly backing off, and realizing his mistake only a second too late. This time, Daniel had him pinned. There was a wide smile on the younger man's face, and there was triumph in his eyes.
"Jack Jack Jack, when will you ever lear...." He stopped suddenly as he felt something hard press against his thigh, and a crimson blush pinked both of their cheeks as they stared into each other's eyes. Slowly, their eyes still locked, blue and brown fires, Daniel lowered his head and pressed his lips against Jack's. This time, they didn't pull away, and though it started out as chaste, it quickly deepened. Gently, so as not to startle the other man, Jack licked at Daniel's lips, his tongue seeking entrance into the beautiful mouth. Finally, that entrance was given, and his soul swelled with joy and love. Love, Jack loved Daniel, but he needed to say it, his soon to be lover needed to know. Pulling away, Jack smiled into his friends eyes,
"I love you Daniel, Danny."
"Let's go inside Jack, Please?"
"What about that hurt...ankle was it?"
"Hmm, I think I'll live.”
“You sure? I could always carry you inside?” Jack joked. Only half kidding.
“Let’s just get inside,” Daniel suggested, stealing a small kiss, “I’m cold. You think you can warm me up colonel?” the only reply he got was another small, very promising, kiss.
When they got inside, they both quickly got out of their heavy jackets, stealing small kisses in between the removal of articles of clothing.
"Daniel, I want you," the older man whispered, voice husky and deep, and Daniel tensed, uncertainty flashing in his cerulean eyes. "...but I can wait if you need me to," he amended, seeing that uncertainty.
"It's okay, I... I've just never done this before. Never been with a man. Never wanted to be."
"Daniel, it's okay, we can..."
"No Jack, I want you...I'm nervous, that's all." Jack smiled at the confession, his brown eyes sparkling.
"Why don't we go to bed and see where things go from there?" he suggested, "We can just kiss if that is all you want to do."
"Kissing is good," Daniel whispered, moving into Jack's arms, pressing so close that there was no denying the desire that they both felt.
"Yeah," Jack whispered, backing the younger man into the bedroom. When they finally reached the bed, Jack coaxed his soon to be lover onto the mattress, and somehow, they both made it without having to break their kiss.
“So fucking…will you hit me if I say beautiful?" he whispered, finally breaking the kiss to bring his callused hands to thread through dirty blond hair.
"I'm not beautiful Jack."
"From where I'm sitting, you're the most gorgeous person I have ever laid eyes on."
"You used to think I was a geek."
"You were, but then...you became more of a soldier then you should ever have been....you became stronger than anyone ever thought you would be." Daniel simply smiled at that, his heart swelling at the sight of the other man. His long time friend. He could do this. He wanted to do this. Wanted to touch and love..
Hands traveled everywhere in a dance so ancient that it seemed to shiver with power, and behind every gesture was a love that left them both breathless. Finally, Daniel spoke, his voice coming out as no more than a breathless sob.
"I want you Jack; I want you inside of me." Jack didn't ask if his lover was sure, he didn't need to. Daniel would attack this as he did everything else in his life…with nothing less than all of himself.
"I love you Danny," was his only response as he pressed a lotion slicked finger into the willing body beneath his. He tangled the fingers of his other hand with Daniels, and at the moment of initial penetration he nipped hard enough at Daniel's throat to break skin. A strangled gasp was his reward and he drowned it out with a passionate kiss. Slowly, ever so slowly, he worked two more fingers into the younger man's body, riding out their passion with gasps and moans of pleasure. Finally it became too much and he removed his fingers, drawing a sound of loss from Daniel. As he began to move his archeologist onto his hands and knees, he was stopped by a gentle hand on his shoulder and soft words from his soon to be lover.
"No Jack, I want to see you."
Jack smiled. "It's gonna hurt more this way Danny, and I won't lie to you, this will hurt."
"S'okay Jack, please, I want you."
He nodded, and instead coaxed the other's impossibly long legs around his waist before positioning himself. "I love you Daniel," he whispered, pressing a kiss to soft lips. He rolled his hips then, and in a swift movement powered by his knees, he entered the body beneath his. Daniel gasped in pain and his hands grasped almost painfully at Jack's back.
"Shhh, I got you love, relax for me and let me in." Slowly, Daniel relaxed, and Jack slid easily the rest of the way. He smiled proudly down at his lover as he leaned down to lick the tears of pain away. Finally, after he was sure that Daniel had relaxed enough, he began to move, setting up a steady rhythm that left them both breathless. All too soon, it was over, leaving them lying in a breathless heap on the bed. No words were passed between them, and soon, they both fell deeply asleep.
~~~~~~

Daniel stood outside on the small observatory that Jack had built on the roof, the chill wind biting deeply into his skin with each gust. Despite the cold, the stars shone brightly in the clear sky, and Daniel couldn't help but wonder how many of them were, in actuality, worlds that they had visited. They had traveled all over the galaxy, seen so many things, and still, earth's night sky fascinated him in a way that only maybe Jack could understand.

"Hey lover," Jack whispered as he wrapped his arms around Daniel's strong waist, "Come back to bed Danny, it’s cold."

"Okay Jack," Daniel replied, allowing Jack to lead him to bed, and into the future. Everything was going to be alright.
