“Matchmaker” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle

“You’re still working,” Vala said as she walked into Daniel’s
office. It was after eleven at night.

“Yes, I am,” he replied, looking up from his book. “Why aren’t
you in bed?”

“I couldn’t sleep,” she told him as she sidled up beside him.
“But I could think of a few other things to do besides work right
now.”

“I’m sure you could, but you’d have to do them alone.” He
returned to his reading, trying not to think about those other
things she had in mind.

“Have you opened your gift from your Secret Santa yet?” she
asked, picking up an artifact that Daniel had sitting on the table
next to his book.

“No, I’m waiting until Christmas,” he said.

“Well, it’s not from me. I didn’t get your name in the drawing,”
she told him. “I got Sergeant Siler. I gave him a card with money
in it.”

Daniel looked up at her. “You gave him cash?”

Vala shrugged. “Everyone likes money, don’t they?” she said.
“Anyway, back to me. I already opened my gift.”

“I’m shocked,” he said, turning back to his work.

“Oh stop, you know I’m not a girl who likes to wait for things,”
she reminded him. “It was Victoria’s Secret lingerie from Mitchell.”

“That’s nice,” he said and stopped reading to look up at her.
“Wait. What?”

“Lingerie,” she said again. “I can show you if you want. I’ll just
go and . . . “

Daniel wasn’t listening. Vala and Mitchell? No, that couldn’t be
right? Could it? Vala did have a way with men. Not all of them
were immune to her charms. But Mitchell? He should know that
Vala couldn’t sustain a normal relationship for too long.

Then why did he get her the lingerie? Daniel had an image of
Mitchell stripping the nightgown off Vala before they fell into
bed together. Just that thought alone made Daniel want to go
find Mitchell and punch him. He was jealous. He admitted it.
It wasn’t like him, but he wanted -“

“Daniel, are you listening to me?” Vala was tapping him on
the shoulder.

“Yes,” he replied, clearing his mind of those unwelcome images.
“You and Mitchell. That’s great. I have work to do so if you’ll
just leave.”

“No. You’re not listening.” Vala pushed his book off to the side,
knocking the artifact out of the way in the process. She hopped up
on the table so she was sitting right in front of him.

Daniel took a step back. “Vala, please,” he said, his voice laced
with exasperation.

“He got me a Victoria’s Secret gift card with a note in it that
read: ‘Make sure you share this with Jackson since it’s really a
gift for him.’”

Daniel wasn’t sure if he heard her right, but he hoped he had.
“Oh. So you and Mitchell aren’t -“

Vala didn’t let him finish that sentence and leaned into kiss
him soundly on the lips leaving no doubt how she felt about him.

Daniel felt guilty for the thoughts about Vala and Mitchell.
“Sorry, I thought that you and Mitchell were -“

“That’s all right,” she said. “I do an awful lot of flirting, so
it was an honest mistake.”

“I don’t have a gift for you for Christmas,” he admitted.
“I got -“

“I don’t need anything but you,” she interrupted, running a
hand down his chest and looking into his eyes.

Daniel moved closer to her and slid his arms around her waist.
“I think I’d like to see that lingerie now.”

She smiled at him. “I thought you might.”
