“Selfless” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle

Vala rummaged around in the pockets of her vest. It’s got
to be here she thought to herself. “Where is it?” she said softly.

“What are you doing?” Daniel whispered to her. “This is a
ceremony. We’re supposed to be quiet.”

“Looking for my lip gloss,” she replied.

“Why?”

She stopped her rummaging and turned to look at him. “Because
I need to reapply.”

Daniel rolled his eyes. “Now is not the time,” he said. “Just wait
until the extraction ceremony is over and -“

Jack looked over at them. “Anything you’d like to share with
the rest of the class?”

“What class?” Vala said, looking down the line at Jack before
turning back to Daniel. “What’s he talking about, Daniel?”

“Daniel, haven’t you taught your girlfriend -“ Jack began.

Daniel glared at Jack. “She’s not my girlfriend.” He looked back
at Vala, who had a big smile plastered on her face.

“Okay, come here.” Daniel took her arm and led her off to the
side a few feet away from the rest of the team. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” she answered. “My lip gloss isn’t here. It’s in the
pocket of my other uniform,” she told him. “Why did we have to
wear these -“ She looked down at her shirt. “What color did you
call this?”

“Khaki.”

“Right. Khaki,” she said. “I don’t like them. It makes my complexion
look sallow. Let’s go back to the black ones, okay.”

“Khaki was the color for the day,” he said.

“I never chose it. Who did? Because I want to talk to them.” Vala
looked over at the rest of the team. “Was it Muscles? Mitchell?”
She raised her voice a little when she started accusing people.

“Shhh. . .”

“Well, next time I get to choose,” she said, lowering her voice.
“And I’m choosing black.”

“What’s wrong?” he asked. “Is it this ceremony? Was it too
much for you to come -“

“No, I’m fine, darling,” she replied, almost believing the lie.
“I’m part of the team and I want to be involved in all of the
Stargating activities.”

“Well, it’s not really an activity,” he clarified. “It’s a ceremony.”

“Whatever,” she said. Vala turned her attention to Ba’al. She knew
what he was about to go through. And it wasn’t going to be fun.
Waking up from what seemed like a very long dream. It took her
a long time to really believe she was free of that thing and her life
was her own again. That was just half the battle. The other part
had been deciding what to do with her life when it became hers yet
again. Ba’al was going to need all the help he could during these
first few days and she wasn’t sure these people could give him
the proper support. But she could. And she would.

“Vala?” Daniel said. “Are you okay?”

She looked at Daniel, not realizing he had been talking to her
until now. “Yes. Why?” she said, hoping he’d believe her again.

He leaned closer to her. “Maybe after this is over we can get
some lunch and talk.”

Vala smiled at him. “I’d like that, but I’ve got something else
to do.” Daniel seemed disappointed and that pleased Vala. “I’d
love to take a raincheck.”

Vala went back and joined the others. Daniel followed her and
she noticed he stood a little closer to her.
