“The Girlfriend” (1/1)
by Lisa Michelle
“Is she behind me?” Daniel asked as he ran into Mitchell’s
office.
Mitchell looked up from his paperwork. “Is who behind you?”
“Vala.”
“No,” he answered.
“Good.” Daniel walked over to Mitchell who was seated at his
desk. “She’s -“
“Ha!” Vala rushed into Mitchell’s office. “There you are.”
She sashayed over to the two of them. “Did you think you could
really get away from me?”
“Yes,” Daniel replied. “I had hoped I would.”
“About this weekend. I thought we could go to the mall. I’ve
got my paycheck and I need to go to Victoria’s Secret -“
“No,” Daniel said.
Vala looked confused. “What do you mean no?”
Daniel crossed his arms over his chest. “What do you think I
mean by no?”
“But we’ve been to the mall before,” she reminded him. “I’m
trying to plan this weekend’s activities.”
“I’d like to spend a quiet weekend at home,” he told her.
“Why?” Vala asked. “You never want to do anything fun.”
“Fun?” Daniel said. “Okay, we do not have the same idea of fun.
You dragged me to that club last weekend with all those people
covered in tattoos and piercings -“
“Well, if you had worn the leather pants like I asked you to
you’d have fit in better with everyone,” she pointed out.
“I don’t want to fit in with -“ Daniel looked back at Mitchell
who was doing his best to ignore them and type away at his computer.
He stepped closer to Vala. “Could we do this later and preferably
somewhere else?”
“No.” Vala pouted. “You just said you don’t want to be with me
so I guess I’ll find someone else to do something with his weekend.”
She headed over to Mitchell and sat down on his lap. “How about
you? You like karaoke, don’t you?”
“Oh, no, you’re not dragging me into this,” Mitchell replied.
He put his hands around her waist and picked her up off his lap.
“Jackson, do something with her.”
Daniel went over and pulled Vala away from Mitchell. “We’ll
talk about this later, okay?” he said softly to her.
“But I want to -“ she began.
Daniel sighed. “Okay, go think of something we can do at my
place together.”
Vala smiled at him.
“Not that.”
“We could invite everyone over for a movie,” he suggested.
“But -“
“No buts. We’re not going out,” he said.
Vala sighed. “Fine.” She walked to the doorway. “I’m going to
go see what Muscles is up to since no one in here is any fun.”
She looked back at the two of them while stressing the word fun,
then headed down the hallway.
Daniel turned back to Mitchell. “She’s driving me crazy.”
“That’s what usually happens with girlfriends,” Mitchell pointed
out.
“Oh, she’s not my girlfriend,” Daniel said.
Mitchell looked at him. “Right,” he said sarcastically.
“No, she’s not,” Daniel reiterated.
“Everyone at the base knows you two are dating,” Mitchell said.
“It’s no secret, Jackson.”
“I wouldn’t really call it dating,” Daniel said. “It’s just spending
time together and -“
Mitchell got up from his chair and walked over to Daniel. “You
two have been to the movies, dinner, and I suspect karaoke.”
Daniel nodded and held up a finger. “Please don’t mention that
word again. I’m trying to purge the memories from my mind.”
“I reckon you got yourself a girlfriend, Jackson,” Mitchell
surmised.
Daniel walked over to the table in the middle of the room and
leaned against it. “I was afraid of that.” He took off his glasses
and rubbed his eyes. “Look at what she’s put me through since
I’ve met her. Now she’s my girlfriend. I must be a masochist.”
“Look, I’m the last person to give advice about women, but
sometimes things just happen before you realize it,” Mitchell
said.
Daniel put his glasses back on. “Oh, thanks. That was profound.”
“Sorry. You wouldn’t spend so much time with her if you didn’t
like her, right?”
“Right,” Daniel replied. “And that’s what’s scaring me.”
“Then break it off with her,” he suggested.
Daniel thought about not having Vala around and realized he
would miss her. He did like spending time with her. Perhaps if
she’d be a bit more flexible and do something he wanted to do
things might get a little better. But breaking it off with her?
He didn’t want that. “No, I couldn’t do that.”
“See, you do like her,” Mitchell said. “My grandma used to say
that love chooses you. You don’t choose it.”
“Well, maybe I should go talk to Vala,” Daniel said.
“Before she plans something outrageous for the two of you to
do,” Mitchell said before heading back to his desk.
“Well, I wouldn’t say anything we’ve done has been outrageous.
I mean what could she really do. She doesn’t have a car or credit
cards -“
Mitchell looked at him. “Do you really want to finish that
sentence, Jackson?”
“Right,” he said before heading to the doorway.
Vala bounced back into Mitchell’s office with a camcorder.
“Daniel! Guess what I found?” She showed him the camcorder.
“Yes, it’s a camcorder.”
“Are you familiar with YouTube?” she asked.
“Oh, I don’t like the sound of this,” Mitchell said.
“Want to know my idea, darling? We could have lots of fun.”
She looked over at Mitchell. “And he could join us, too.”
