Summary: Four drabbles from Avalon Pt. 1 and Line in the Sand. There's a reason Cameron Mitchell chose to join SG-1. But getting what you wish for isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
1. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed...
After they've all gone home, after the ceremony, Sam comes back. Or stays. Whatever.
He's pretty sure he's not hallucinating, or dreaming. The weight of the medal on his chest is real. Everything below that starts to fuzz out, until it fades away completely. But the medal is real.
So is the touch of Sam's hand. "Hey," she smiles.
"Hey," he mumbles back. And whoa, is that awful noise his voice? Good thing the ceremony didn't require him to actually say anything. That would have been embarrassing.
Sam doesn't say much after that. She just sits there, keeping him company.

2. What if the world needs saving because I screwed up 'cause you weren't here in the first place?
"Talk to you soon," Sam says, and the video link shuts down. He waves at the screen, even though she can’t see him anymore.
She won't be coming back. Not any time soon, that is. Sam's in her element now, surrounded by technology and challenges and problems to solve. And he's a selfish asshole for wanting to take her away from all that.
But damn if he doesn't want to do it anyway.
He groans out loud and scrubs at his face, as if he could physically push away those unwanted thoughts.
It's no good. He still wants her there.

3. Look, I'm sure she'll be interested in whatever we find.
Ancient treasure and King Arthur and still Sam isn't coming, and he's hard-pressed to hide his disappointment. He knows he's doing a poor job of it, though, when even Vala tries to offer some encouraging advice.
Well, maybe they'll find something new and exciting, something guaranteed to bring her back to Stargate Command. She'll set up shop in her lab again and he can take her out for breakfast and they can catch up on the last year or so - not that he's got a whole lot of interesting stories to tell.
It can be just the way he's imagined.

4. I worked my ass off to get this team back together. Now we've lost... well, we've lost Jackson. I can't lose you, too.
There aren't many days when he regrets where he is or what he did to get here, but this, oh man, this is one of them. It rips his heart out to see her lying there in pain and not be able to do anything to help her.
He wishes now that she had never come back. That she had stayed away. Far away. He'd give anything to undo it all, to go back to those first few days and say it all differently, do it all over again. Whatever it takes to keep her away.
To keep her safe.
