Why this is a must read: This is a great whumper/team-on-earth tale and a nice look at John as a pilot of planes rather than jumpers. In this story, Sheppard and McKay arrange with the IOA to take Teyla and Ronon on a trip around Europe. John is thrilled when it turns out Colonel Ramos, one of his first flying instructors, is the pilot on their flight to London. John is as jinxed on Earth as in Pegasus though and their reunion is soon marred when things soon go very wrong per usual (albeit in a more mundane and non-Ancient technology or Wraith way) in this excellent action-adventure story. While the plot will be familiar to anyone who's seen an action movie involving a commercial jet, this is in no way a bad thing since it allows the author a lot of room to focus on and flesh out the relationship between Sheppard and Colonel Ramos. Their friendship and mutual respect is carefully drawn and he and Sheppard have a touching camraderie and father-son-like affection between them. Sheppard's rebellious streak and issues with authority have been explored ad nauseam and it's a wonderful change of pace to see him with a beloved former commander and mentor. I love most the scenes of the two of them flying. The team dynamic is well-used to propel the action and Ronon, McKay and Teyla all play important parts. There's also much painful Sheppard-whump for hurt/comfort aficionados and O'Neill makes a special cameo appearance.

Why this is a must read: RowenaR, our beloved mod, is best known for her exquisite Lorne/Cadman angst and action/adventures stories, has created the very memorable and vivid team of SG-10 in her Minor Characters series: Air Force Major Tom Moore, the arrogant, sarcastic, super-competent and capable team leader, his friend from childhood, the wry and a tad wild medical doctor, Captain Laura Greenspan, Master Sergeant Simon DeLisle, an explosives expert with a dry sense of humor, known as Dee, and the newcomer to their team, Marine lieutentant and linguist Maureen Reece, known as Mouse for her shyness and clumsiness.
The author quickly pulls you into the interpersonal dramas and relationships of the team as they recover from a mission gone bad in the first story in the series: Moore's impatience for the newbie Reece's lack of knowledge or skill, the bonding between fellow female soldiers Greenspan and Reece as the older officer mentors and tries to improve the confidence of the younger officer, Moore and Greenspan's teasing brother-sister friendship, the unspoken mutual and completely forbidden attraction (and perhaps love?) between officer Greenspan and enlisted Dee, and Moore and Dee's camraderie from years in the Special Forces together. There's also much more to Moore's reactions to Reece than impatience, not that he's willing to admit it. Things get even more interesting and intense between all of them when they are sent on an undercover mission to bust a rogue cell of ex-Marines running an off-world bio-weapons lab in which many things go wrong and some startling revelations and conspirators come to light.
It takes a talented and bold author to get a reader this invested in the relationships and careers of a group of entirely original characters in a series in which actual canon characters appear only peripherally (although Jack O'Neill as the commander of the SGC and Lorne as a longtime buddy of Moore and Greenspan gets some hilarious moments). RowenaR, as always, exhibits a deft hand with characterizations, action, humor and angst. Once you start, you'll be compelled to check out the sequels, Check out the sequelsfor the further adventures of these characters.
