Gutter

I get off the subway today and purchase my latteamericano for maximum caffeine and don't sit down today. I can't stomach sitting without reading material, and I may as well be in the office early making money. I'm walking down the street and there's the guy with the hose, and the guy with the sweep broom at the side of the road, in the gutter if you will, doing his small part to make this city cleaner. Does it work? How well? Who knows?

I wonder how you get a job cleaning gutters. "What do you do for a living, Joe?" "Oh, I push a broom through the gutters at Astor Place, yeah, there's a lot of room for advancement and I get paid well since no one else wants to do it." It's true. Have you ever thought about the fact that your garbage man is probably making more than you are? Well he is. They make close to six figures in my town if they've been at it a little while. More power to them, I think I'd rather be broke than deal with garbage and dead animals all day. Yeesh.

It's so interesting to see the contrasts in NYC. Clean and dirty, dark and light, rich and poor.. and when i say rich and poor I want you to think about this: There are homeless people regularly curling up in the doorways at the Starbucks above which Matt Damon makes his residence. Penniless, and a famous multi-millionaire, sharing the same block. It makes you wonder.

I long for more financial security. I should be more careful with my money, eat out less, drink less, buy less music.. but then, I'd be missing out on what it is to be my age. I don't HAVE to be that responsible yet, and I fully believe I will be when I have to be. I've budgeted for the car thing, and I'm sure it will be fine.. especially with my rent going down. Anyway, I have been saving, and I will have a big chunk of money when I go back to Wisconsin that I definitely did not have after last summer. Which is good. It will be nice to be financially stable.

I can't wait to get back. Can't. Wait.
