Today has been...not as productive as I'd hoped, but I regret nothing. It's a gorgeous spring day, so I abandoned my uranium mining research for a while and went downtown to wander around for a bit. Got my hair cut by a lady from Panama who didn't say anything to me in English except for a remark about how many cowlicks I had, and in spite of the lack of conversation everything came out rather well. I also went to the used book shop, which is run by one of my favorite people ever: Russ the English Stormtrooper.
I think I've written about him before, but Russ is one of those people who seems more like a fictional character than a regular human being -- he's a middle-aged gent from Yorkshire who's part of the 501st Legion, the costume/volunteer group who organize all kinds of charity events while dressed as Imperial Stormtroopers. He's like an infinitely more affable version of Bernard from Black Books, and seems to live on a diet of tea, cigarettes, and interesting stories. I hung out in the shop for quite a while discussing the perils of Russian literature, James Herriot's "All Creatures Great And Small" series, and his adventures from when he worked in a bookshop in Charing Cross where Christopher Lee was one of the regulars. I always wind up leaving the store about an hour later than I'd intended with twice as many books as I'd originally meant to buy, but it's totally worth it.
Long story short, college towns contain all the most interesting ways to distract yourself from working on your essays. And now back to writing.
