I'm usually fairly unpatriotic... not because of apathy... but because of the strong feelings that I
have concerning the direction this country is taking politically and because of
the overwhelming consumer-oriented mindset that all of its residents are locked
into.
But my political ideals don't trump the human stories behind
9/11.
I watched a television program this evening entitled
"The Flight That Fought Back," which detailed the events surrounding
United Airlines Flight 93's crash. If you didn't
watch it.... I am suggesting it
now.
I don't find myself being swayed by these types of human
stories often on tv. But the reason for
that is because, too often, the stories are either propaganda or
advertisement. The government will make
up a story about some tiny little girl in the army who fought back 100s of
enemy combatants with a pistol... and
expect everyone to just gush emotion over the story and thus be swayed into
believing that its political agenda is worthy of following. Or Lifetime will pump movie after movie about
this or that... full of intense emotion..
and then sell coffee and cars and insurance in between the
programming. I'm sure many of these
stories are worthy of contemplation and may involve situations that are very
similar to the viewers... I'm sure some
of these programs are helpful.. but
most........ are simply attempting to sell you something else.
I think most people were somehow encouraged by the story of
the passengers on Flight 93 fighting back against the hijackers. Most of us found some new sense of patriotism
around the events of 9/11... whether you
agree or disagree with the leaders... or the gov't... or the religious right... when you see people's lives destroyed so
quickly... you sense that something is very very wrong about it.
To hear the stories of a small group of everyday people...
fighting against what they know is wrong...
risking their lives... to save their own.. to save someone else’s.... to just simply undo the wrong that was
taking place... just make this
wrongdoing stop... now. It makes me
proud. Not to be an American... but to be alive... to be human... and to know that I care about people in the
same way... to know that most people
care about people in that same way...
to know that... for a short
little instance... Americans... entrenched in their everyday life... of
making money... spending money... oblivious to many of the problems in the
world and in our country that caused this whole event to happen... for this short time... they could break through all of that... could shed all of that.. and face the simply
facts.. and then act... and correct the wrongdoing....
If things could be that simple in everyday life. If those leaders that are in charge of the
full power of the U.S. Gov't... and
those that control and lead the economic powers in this country... could just sit down in a plane like Flight
93... and be forced... to just stop the wrongdoing...
I know I'm sounding idealistic here... it's
improbable... it's impossible.. but it gives me hope to hold in the goodness of
everyday people... it gives us all a
lesson in the importance of that... in the importance of the protection and preservation of that... the goodness of everyday people.
Fuck President George W. Bush.... if I ever meet him face to face... I"ll break his god-damn nose.....
I've gotta stop all this preachy
shit... I'm sounding
stupid...
anyways.. it was a pretty good show...
but you know.... even in
writing this... I feel politcally
immature... I feel philosophically
immature... I know things aren't as simple and
cheesy as any of this.... I know the world is
grey... grey ... grey.....!
but I'm just happy those people fucked up some motherfuckers before they died... I'm happy for them.
