It was perfectly safe, as Jim and Spock kept annoyingly reiterating, but that didn't help him any. Phobias didn't usually respond to logic.
Last leave, he'd had Angela and Jim to keep him company when he journeyed outside the ship. With the mission, though, both of them were up to their eyeballs in preparations. McCoy and his medical staff had the advantage in that regard; most of them wouldn't even meet the Romulan ambassador coming aboard.
As he approached the lift, he looked around for any familiar face to help steady his nerves.
