Cordelia was thankful she did not have a roommate yet, as it certainly helped in getting out of the dorms at night. She held two small sticks with her, wanting to practice some of the moves that her friend Angel had taught her before she left for Starfleet.
She passed by one of the seemingly empty training rooms when something caught her attention. Was that... fire?
Cordelia went inside to investigate. "Oh," she muttered, seeing a dark-haired woman in front of the fire. "Uh... hi?"
Interrupted, but not irritated by it (these rooms weren't exactly made for what she was using them for, after all), Mars turned to see the young woman who had entered. "Good evening," she greeted, moving to stand, the fire left alone, for the moment, "Do you need this room?"
"Oh! No, not really," Cordelia answered, though she stepped further inside the room. "It was just... there was a fire and I thought... well. 'Arson' was the first thing that came to mind, followed shortly by 'screaming for help at the top of my lungs'. But, um... if you're busy and everything, I can just leave."
Mars shook her head. "It's fine," she replied, turning back to the fire and raising a hand over it, "I was near finished." Closing the hand into a fist, the fire immediately extinguished, not even leaving marks on the ground from where it had been sitting, nor leaving a smell. It was like the fire was never there.
"Fire is my element," Mars replied, "I can create it, control it, and communicate with it." It was the simplest explanation, and she wasn't trying to sound uppity. It was just a fact.
Mars' brow furrowed in confusion at the reference; she knew that Cordelia was likely referencing something from her culture, but she was unfamiliar with it. "If that makes it easier for you to understand, then yes."
"Well, uh, yeah. Because in that movie there was this girl who can control fire like you, but then she went all evil and killed people and it was so horrible and... I'm babbling. Sorry."
Mars nodded. "Pleasure to meet you, Miss Chase," she replied, "I am Mars." She offered her hand with a smile, deciding to just push the awkwardness aside and move on.

Well. This was awkward.
"I'm Cordelia Chase, by the way."

A sad tone colored Cordelia's words, as she remembered just how much she missed her own people in L.A.
