Mercury happened to have been walking by the room when she noticed the strange, arrhythmic flickering of the light from behind the doors. Concerned, she hurried inside to find a fire indeed - perfectly under the control of Mars. She gave a smile of relief.
Although she was reluctant to interrupt the other girl, she decided it was best after another moment. "Mars, is everything alright?"
The familiar energy alerted Mars to Mercury's presence before she even spoke. At her words, she allowed a tilt of her head, her eyes to open, but she didn't look away from the fire. "I'm not sure yet," came the reply.
That wasn't particularly reassuring. Mercury gave the back of Mars' head a quizzical look. Automatically, her eyes glanced towards the fire but she, of course, saw nothing within it.
"That's just it," Mars replied, "I don't see anything. I haven't had a single dream or vision since my arrival to this Academy. It's... troubling." After centuries of weekly visions, one could hardly blame her for her concern. Even if the result was foretelling something trivial, she still had them. To suddenly be without...
"Maybe it's only natural," Mercury says thoughtfully. "Have you had visions on Earth before?"
That question doesn't really solve much if Mars says no, as they've only rarely been on Earth before, but it's a start. Mercury considered a few other possibilities alongside the first.
"Aside from that, this is a different world. I wonder if it's just because of that." Though she's used her powers, and so has Mars. Could it just be her spiritual sense thrown off by the different dimension?
Mars put out the fire as she replied. "I've never been on Earth long enough to have visions. I suppose it could be that part of my powers adjusting to the dimensional shift; there are different energies here, but also familiar ones."
"Aside from ourselves, and Luna, and Nephrite and the prince? Are they just the planet's energies? The water feels similar here to the Earth we knew."
It wasn't taking long for Mercury to slip into analysis mode, or at least to have a lot of questions. If something was actually wrong, they'd need to find out what it was quickly.
Mars thought carefully. "Aside from us, and the students at this Academy," she replied, being sure to phrase her words carefully, "There are other energies, natural ones. Some feel similar to what we know, others are totally different, and unidentifiable. My core powers are fine; I can attack and defend with equal skill as I could back home. It's just the visions and dreams that have inexplicably stopped."
"Maybe you just need to become accustomed to this Earth," Mercury suggested optimistically. "After awhile, everything might return just the way it was." She'd like to think so, at least. Not that the academy seemed particularly dangerous, but it was worrisome to see her - well, her friend - having that sort of difficulty.
Mars nodded. "That's probably it," she agreed, "I'll try not to worry about it so much." She finally approached Mercury, heels clacking on the floor. "Have you completed everything for the day?" she asked, changing the subject.
A crisp nod. "Mm. Were you also finished? We can go back to the dormitories together," Mercury offered. It would give them time to talk about this more, too.
"Also," she added as the thought struck her, "You should probably talk to Luna if something is wrong with your spiritual powers. She might know something, or a way to help."
Although she was reluctant to interrupt the other girl, she decided it was best after another moment. "Mars, is everything alright?"
