Dear Purimgifts Author!

Jan 05, 2021 21:55

Hello! This is my first time signing up for Purimgifts, I am VERY EXCITED, and I'm looking forward to reading/hearing/seeing whatever you create. :-) Here are some thoughts if you want 'em:

General notes: I’m starfishstar on AO3, DW and LJ, if you want to look me up in any of those places. Oh, and I'm new to Purimgifts and I'm not totally sure how the podficcing aspect works, but if you want to podfic anything of mine, you certainly have blanket permission!

Likes: A focus on character interactions, be that friendship or romance or family. Found family dynamics. Humor and banter. UST (all the UST) as long as it resolves by the end. Happy or hopeful endings (angst and complexity are fine - I like stories that are realistic! - but I do look for for at least a degree of hope). I'm equally fond of genfic and of pairings (F/F, M/M, M/F, it's all good with me.) Especially for this exchange, feel free to lean as hard as you want in the silly/goofy/fun/romp/parody/humor direction - it's Purim, after all!

DNW: Just the big ones that I've already tagged in my sign-ups (Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con).

Judaism: I’m Jewish (not observant or even particularly practicing much of the time, but it's an extremely important part of my cultural/family identity) and I was so delighted when I stumbled across this fest, a joyful fic exchange based around a joyful Jewish holiday. You're certainly not required to write Jewish content into your pod/fics, but if it's something you want to and feel able to do, I'll be super-extra-especially-delighted. :-)

FANDOMS:

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

This film was something of a revelation to me. I fell for it at first for itself (oh, the exquisite longing of first love!) and only afterward realized I'd accidentally found myself a Jewish-character fandom. I hadn't realized how much that would mean to me: to be able to throw myself into fannishness about something where the characters happened to be like me.

That said, I'll love anything about Elio/Oliver, from romance to joyful moments to deepest pining. I also love Elio's parents, how wise and kind they are, how they let him fumble his way into the world and figure things out, but also are there for him when he needs them. So, anything about any of them!

And if you want to pursue the specifically-Jewish-content route - Elio and Oliver celebrating holidays together? sharing their favorite family foods with each other? discovering unexpected differences between the traditions they grew up with (Oliver in the US, Elio in Italy)?

Fandom-specific DNW: I'd prefer that plot points/characters from the book sequel “Find Me” be left out of it. Consider yourself unbound by that particular headcanon, and free to explore any headcanon of your own. :-) (The movie after all, unlike the book, leaves it open - we don’t know what happens next after that Chanukah-time phone call.)

All-of-a-Kind Family Series - Sydney Taylor

When I pondered what to request for Purimgifts - this joyfully Jewish fest - All-of-a-Kind-Family sprang to mind! I haven't read these books since I was a kid, but they meant a lot to me. (Still do.) Any adventures among any/all of the sisters in the vein of the stories from the books would be delightful - interactions with their neighbors and community in the immigrant milieu of the Lower East Side.

Hamster Princess Series - Ursula Vernon

I'm only now reading this charming series, and I would never have thought to request it in a fic exchange - until I saw it in the tagset here, and thought, of course. Who could be more Purim-ready than Harriet Hamsterbone, forever charging in to save the day in places that girls (and princesses) aren't expected to go? Go wild with any sort of silly or sweet or serious adventure for Harriet. I can't help thinking of the potential for fusions with Jewish folklore or stories... (Harriet and the Hanukkah Goblins??? That would be the light of my life.) But fairy tales or any other kinds of stories are equally welcome!

Fleabag (TV)

Fleabag feels like a good fit for Purimgifts, too, as a show written and created by woman and centered on female characters. I'm open to anything: Fleabag & Claire? Fleabag & Boo? Fleabag/Priest? Fleabag and her next serious entanglement, maybe a woman this time? Or maybe after crashing so hard into Catholicism, Fleabag's next encounter is with Judaism in some way? Or Fleabag at her café, at the center of this community she's accidentally created around herself.

Graceling Realm Series - Kristin Cashore

This series came to mind for Purimgifts because of evil viziers... Surely the treatment of Gracelings counts? The way Katsa's king/uncle controls her and uses her as his tool? Anything focusing on Katsa (like Esther, overcoming what's expected of her!) would be neat. But absolutely anything in this world (including Fire, or Bitterblue) would be great - I just love all these characters so much. Fandom-specific DNW: Please no spoilers for Winterkeep (new book, eeeee!), only because I'm not sure how soon I'll get to read it. :-)

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Another female-centered fandom! I have no particular prompts, I just really, really love these characters. (Are you noticing a theme?) I am a sucker for anything at all about Phryne/Jack, but I'd also be delighted to see Phryne & Mac, Phryne & Dot... Phryne interacting with anyone in her life, really. :-) Fandom-specific DNW: I guess here, too, I have to ask for please no spoilers for the movie (Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears) because I haven't had a chance to see it yet!

Hereville graphic novel series - Barry Deutsch

A last-minute addition to my sign-up, because oh my GOSH, I can't believe I almost forgot about Hereville! Speaking of things that are both Jewish and charming. And of girl characters who channel the spirit of Esther! I love Mirka's adventures, I love the gentle and wise relationship with her stepmother, I love everything. Or feel free to catch up with Mirka a bit later in life, as a teenager or young adult - what is that like for her?

Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling

And last but not least, my forever fandom, Harry Potter. :-) Harry-Potter-fic-in-which-everything-is-the-same-except-that-some-of-our-old-favorite-beloved-characters-are-Jewish was one of the first things I discovered about Purimgifts, so I've got a fondness for that. Headcanons that have particularly struck a chord for me include Remus and Lily being Jewish, or maybe Hermione... Or anyone! I'm happy with anyone and everyone. Celebrating Jewish holidays at Hogwarts? Finding creative ways to celebrate the holidays even during the darkest points of the war? Marauders era, canon era, post-canon, anything. :-) Fandom-specific DNW: And, sorry, here too I have to ask for please nothing from Cursed Child or Fantastic Beasts. (Nothing against Fantastic Beasts, I just haven't seen it!)
