I didn't like The Explosionist much but maybe you will. I thought the worldbuilding was better than the actual story.

Urg, just read your GoodReads review ... big cliffhanger ending? I might be finished with it where I am. :(

Not a cliffhanger, just - a lot of things are left unresolved and it is obvious there must be more to the story that will be (was? I wasn't interested enough to look for a second book) continued.
