The Big Sleep (1946)
Humphrey Bogart is private detective Philip Marlowe - he takes on a blackmail case that's more than what it seems. Some snappy dialogue, I liked Lauren Bacall, but the plot didn't make sense and I found myself frustrated. I feel guilty about this because this is supposed to be such a classic, but I just couldn't get into it.
Moon (2009)
Sam Rockwell is great in this movie about a guy on a 3-year contract alone on the moon. (Kevin Spacey is the voice of the computer, Gerty.) Not entirely what I expected, but interesting. I wanted MORE about the moon life before the events of the movie unfolded, and how he got there in the first place, etc. I also wanted more about day-to-day moon life.
Shutter Island (2010)
Urg, I did not like this at all. It was visually fascinating and even lovely in parts but the plot was so contrived and the dialogue so lame ... sigh. I enjoyed A.O. Scott's review much more than the actual movie.
Winter's Bone (2010)
I read the book before I saw the movie, and honestly, it's just as bleak as the book and somehow both as violent and not as violent as I expected. Beautiful to look at, but so so bleak.
