Veterans Day

hello everyone,

I spent two hours on wednesday looking for speeches that I agreed with. That fit the way i felt. I never found one, So here it is. because clearly no one sees Veterans Day the way I do. Please read it.

One thing I did find was a quote from a veteran who had been in vietnam while his wife was in college. He said there was so much unrest on the campus that she wouldn't tell her friends that her husband was in the military. he said something to the extent on "It is fine for Americans to protest a war. That is their right. What we have to remember is the individual soldier who does not choose where he or she will be stationed and believes that they are doing good in putting their lives in harm's way."

I wasn't always proud of living in America, but i've gotten to be. For one thing, since the day I was born I've been incredibly stubborn. When I was little I once slept in the downstairs bathroom because my dad refused to carry me up the stairs. I'm still that stubborn but now I apply it to seeing what I believe in succeed. I'm a christian and I want to be a minister. With all my heart. In America I can say that, I can worship my God openly, and I can do it even though I'm a girl. I learned about the puritans, and how they left everything they knew and loved for a waste land so that they could worship and educate the way they each believed was right. And New England began.

I wasn't always into veterans either. They tend to be old and outspoken. But when I went to the oratorical there was a little old lady (it turned out she was 90 years old) there listening to my fairly boring speech. They said she still works 2 hours a day for the American Legion. She was so excited to see me put on this speech. So interested in what I had to say. They all were.

My mum works at the Veteran Memorial hospital in Boston. She says that one third of our veterans are homeless. She said that he first patient was a veteran addicted to cocaine and heroine with diabetes, hepatitis C and an incredible loss of muscle mass. "He was like a baby" she said of handling him. One night when she went in he was groaning "wheeeere's my wiiife". She told me the woman had been dead for five years. There is little to nothing to help him get another job, another home, or even new friends. he was only an example.

Men and women returning from service are given little help finding a new job, especially as many of them do not have a complete education. They are given little psychological help to deal with the horrors they have witnessed and experienced. Many need to create a new life style that accommodates a lost limb, taking away a persons independence and often dignity.

I don't think much of U.S. war strategy; and I know that people that enlist in the Army do sign up for a certain deal of pain, and find something enjoyable in the life style. But not all of our veterans did sign up, and so far as I have seen the overwhelming majority of soldier very sincerely believe that they are, with their pain, in some way protecting our live and homes. and the things that we believe in.

And that's why Veteran's Day should get a little more respect.

(because I had to say it) Happy Veterans Day
