On Graduation Weekend

May 24, 2009 21:33

Well, it's official. I'm a graduate of SF State. After seven long years, I am a college graduate and have a degree. I swear to you, I never thought this day would come. Up until the very end, I had very real fears that SOMETHING would prevent me from completing the degree. I am happy to report that my fears were entirely unfounded.

As for the graduation ceremony, I'm glad I walked. My parents came into town on Friday and left this morning, and we had a nice (albeit cold, cloudy and windy) day at school with tons of photos, a lot of sitting in a stadium, and a general feeling of accomplishment in the air. Jeffrey Tambor (George Sr. on Arrested Development) was our "Alumnus of the Year" and spoke, which was great. Willie Mays, Jr. spoke as well, which was hilarious because he wasn't entirely coherent, but no one seemed to mind considering how important he is to San Francisco's cultural history. Our student speaker, Jessica Aguliar, went on a powerful rant about social activism that, while moving, was out of place and too forceful given the setting. All in all, though, it was an exciting experience. The after-graduation receptions were rather unexciting, however, though dinner was nice, and my party went very well. I was very glad that so many of my friends, including rminct, were able to make the ceremonies and dinner. I still have several bottles of vodka at home now, though, so if anyone ever wants to come hang out, let me know and I'll whip up some drinks.

I would like to say a special thank you to everyone who: brought a gift (especially since I didn't expect any), came to the party, sent me congratulations, helped me out over the course of this semester, this year, and really my entire undergraduate career, or otherwise tolerated my ridiculousness during the past four semesters. It feels very strange to be done, and I have a feeling this is going to be a strange summer - I'm not used to having so much free time, and I'm probably going to go nuts.

Aaron has a few pictures of the event, and my mom has several as well, so I'll try to post a few of them later when I get them. I looked ridiculous in our purple robes, but really... we all looked like purple monsters, so it was ok.

Final Graduation Stats:
*Degree Earned: Bachelor of Arts, English - Language Studies
*Magna Cum Laude Graduate
*Cumulative GPA: 3.74; SFSU GPA 3.86.
