It's been a movie weekend here...haven't accomplished nearly as much as I wanted art-wise, because I actually stopped and watched bits of the movies.
First was Staying Alive. I can't describe the joy inside when I found this on Netflix. Yes, it's an older movie, and it doesn't have a terrific plot. What it has is dancing. I'm a sucker for a movie with dancing, and dance montages, so in my mind, this movie is nothing but a dance montage loosely held together by a sketchy plot. John Travolta looks perhaps better in this than he has in any other role that he's done. Cynthia Rhodes...I've always adored her. This, Dirty Dancing, and married to Richard Marx. Yes, I had a bit of a girlcrush on her. And Finola Hughes...this is the first time I saw her, and she's such a delicious bitch compared to the sweet Charmed mom she turns into.
What can I say? I love dancers and dancing movies.
That was Saturday night. And now I'm slightly amused by that, as Staying Alive is of course the sequel to Saturday Night Fever.
Yesterday, we watched Tangled in the afternoon. I think David was a little disappointed in the music...he thought it sounded like re-treads of Aladdin's soundtrack. There really weren't any memorable songs. It was a cute movie though, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I liked Rapunzel...she was feisty and not helplessly fluttery. Pascal the chameleon was the best part though. Again, I have a weakness for amusing animal sidekicks...especially ones that get their point across without talking. They're far better if the animators can make them speak without words.
The last movie we watched was The Forgotten.
It started decently enough. David had seen it years ago in theaters, and said at the beginning that he wouldn't spoil anything for me. He did keep his word, even when I started getting a sinking feeling around the 1/3 through point and asked if it was aliens. I got a Children of the Earth vibe from the whole thing (yes, I am quite aware of which came first...and also quite aware of which I saw first)
It felt slightly predictable after that point :( It wasn't a bad movie, and David pointed out that when it came out, the premise worked quite well. I like Julianne Moore and Alfre Woodard. It was a decent enough movie to have on in the background, but it wasn't anything that made me sit up and say WOW!
