In this lovely section I shall enlighten you on the idiosynchricies of this particular version of the Emperor. None of these facts are supported by the canon, please do not take them as such.
★ Alcohol consumption. Mateus does drink, but he limits it only to wine, and only the finest sort. He's very picky about what he drinks, and refuses to let anything subpar touch his lips (unless he's already drunk, in which case he doesn't care). He will occasionally drink stronger drinks (he's not fond of beer), for the sole purpose of getting drunk. It's just a matter of coping, really. He's not an alcoholic (yet).
★ Drugs. Mateus doesn't do any drugs. He looks down on them and on those who use them. Why would an Emperor want something to control his life?
★ Relationships. Emperor Mateus looks down on everyone (calling them "insects," "worms," or "peons" normally). There are very few people he actually considers close (and they change depending on the roleplay). He can be quite respectful when talkng to others, though his tone is typically condescending. He refers to Firion by name rather than one of his usual insults.
★ Sexuality. Sex is sex whether you're fucking or getting fucked! Mateus is bisexual and perfectly content with it. He tends to choose men over women, due to his chauvinistic nature.
★ History. Besides the fact that he is Emperor of Palamecia and attacked Fynn, nothing is known about Mateus' past. Therefore, it is all head-canon! At age eleven, Mateus' father (the previous emperor) died from disease and complications from surgery (in an attempt to stop said disease from spreading). Mateus has always been serious and mature, but at age eleven he wasn't quite old enough to rule on his own. An "advisor" of sorts was put in place. It didn't take Mateus long to figure out that the advisor was using his position to sway the politics his own way. Mateus had him executed and took the rule for himself (at the tender age of thirteen). Since then, he has run Palamecia the way he wants to, though he does get advice from his generals and other elders. Mateus' mother died in childbirth, making him an only child and last remaining of the royal family.
★ Powers. The obvious ones: Flare, Starfall, Fire, Thunder. Mateus can also use Blizzard and the -ra, -ga, and -ja attacks of the three main Black Mage spells. He can cast others as well, but those are canon. Starfall is a more powerful version of Meteor (which he can also cast). Mateus can float as well (Dissidia), and has a great amount of magical power. Likewise, he lacks physical prowess (despite his amazing body, wtf) and prefers tactics over brutally ravaging the opponent. He's not the sort to rush onto the battlefield without a plan. He uses traps like in Dissidia, though they are not his main method of attack. He has some control over monsters and can speak to them, such as the Lamia Queen in FFII. He can also use wind magic to create large cyclones... in which he can fit his entire palace.
★ Quirks. Mateus cannot pass by a mirror without pausing to examine his reflection. He's obsessed with his appearance and is constantly fixing his hair and outfit. He has a fixation with anything shiny (though certainly tries to hide that). He tends to get obsessed over things easily (such as defeating the rebels, even to the point of ignoring the rest of his empire).
TBC.
