the chimera

In the bleak light of the day,
The pale sun could not atone
The thick, ubiquitous gray,
Where I wandered listless and alone.

Through the rain came into view
A string of pearls glinting white.
They conjured up a ghost of you,
Adrift in endless night.

I dragged them to my golden hearth,
You wailed from distant hell.
Mordantly my mind did birth
A creature, dark and fell.

It snatched the stone with a wicked mien
That shrill scream stayed from far beyond.
I quivered like a child,
Demoralized by her scream.

Her forlorn cries did reach a peak,
Knowledge lit the demons eyes,
In its panoptic gaze i could not speak,
Nor could I hear His lies.

Through the miasma I did follow
That demon of my creation.
My heart beat sorrow, my soul rang hollow,
in the din of sudden realization.

We came across a clouded fen,
I stained the pearls with one last kiss.
We shared a look, long; maudlin,
and cast them into the abyss.

Through clouds we walked,
In reverie,
And there's little left, it seems,
But the chimera of that memory,
The very essence of dreams.
