I’ve been reading some of the views on tumblr and the episode seems to be a little like marmite. Most people seem to love it but there are a couple who hate it. I’m one of those who loved it. Not that I think the script was wonderful and not that I think the story-line was particularly original, saving innocent peasants from nasty tyrants happens in pretty much every single TV show at some point. And oh look, they’re training them up and making a barricade, that’s different. However, it was like the old days again. It was the four boys...and Treville...out on a mission helping people and it was about them and not about palace affairs. I loved it. I really did. I love character development and this had it in spades.
I won’t go into everything I loved but Athos having to go back to face his past was very powerful and yes, he was selfish at points and it took the others to make him see that but that’s what I love about the show; they need each other for balance. Which is why Aramis always makes crazy decisions because he’s more of a loner in the emotional sense and hides things from the others. You need them, love, just like they need you. And Athos is human, he's not perfect. I like seeing him be selfish and stubborn at times. He is racked with demons and guilt and he doesn’t know how to cope with it all and yet he is also noble and believes in justice so he couldn’t just walk away. He's such a wonderfully flawed and beautiful character. Hats off to Tom Burke for playing him so well.
I love how the Athos and d’Artagnan relationship is developing even further. Athos has gone from being the role-model to now needing to lean on d’Artagnan more. It’s a lovely two-way romance friendship. And d’Artagnan makes him smile big smiles!!
Thank heavens Porthos and Aramis have made up from whatever non-existent fall-out they had which seemed to stop them from interacting in the past four episodes. And thank goodness that positive and sassy Aramis has made a return. Getting him away from the palace and away from the baby and back to fighting again seems to have finally brought him out of his depressive rut. He's a born solider, it's where he belongs. I love the fact he was enjoying himself in the countryside so much, a cheeky nod to s1 ep9. Aramis, we all know you’re going to get very bored very quickly out in the middle of no-where. You're not fooling us.
I enjoyed the Aramis and d'Artagnan moments as well, they have a very sweet friendship. Whilst I know Santi is the oldest actor, Aramis always seems the youngest in the show out of the three inseparables (I don't know if he's meant to be) so they are a bit like the cheeky young ones. I suspect it's because Luke and Santi are such good buddies in real life, it comes across well on screen.
And I thought Treville was just brilliant in this. He’s just a born leader and even when he’s trying really hard not to get involved, he can’t help himself. I like how he stepped in over Athos to take control and Athos just lets him. You’re just the boss, Treville. I hope you get your job back.
I don’t like the fact they made Athos to be Athos’ surname and not his assumed name but I’ll let that slide and, hold on, was Milady telling the truth after all?? Did Catherine see what really happened?? I don't know what I think about that. Are they trying to make us feel sorry for Milady? She does go around murdering a lot of people, writers.
I guess I have come to the sad realisation, due to the fact I loved this episode far more than the others, that Rochefort and Louis have been ruining it for me. Louis is brilliant in short-bursts, but they’ve been using him too much recently and Rochefort...he's just no Cardinal Richelieu. And I wanted to like him SO badly, I really did try but I guess I don't.
Anyway, as for the next episode...ARAMIS NOOOOOO!!!!
