a word about "character death"

Apr 17, 2012 14:48

Honestly, would no one read Shakespeare's tragedies if they all came with "character death" warnings? Would no one watch operas like Tristan und Isolde because of the tragic ends? Would people refuse to watch Steel Magnolias because her character dies and her mom's all upset and crying at her funeral? Do you ignore HP Books 5, 6, and 7 because too many of our beloved witches and wizards die in the fight of good against evil?

Sorry. This is just a pet peeve I have about fandom. I understand that it's "entertainment" and most people just want happy endings, but there's a lot to be said for sad stories, too. I think they can touch people much deeper than the fluffy ones. Greek plays only came in two flavors: Comedy and Tragedy. All of life rides a see-saw between laughter (happiness, joy, love) and tears (anger, pain, grief). The first seems shallow until you've gone through the second. That's why I like the angsty stories, so those of you who write that, keep them coming!

Okay. Off my soapbox now.
