Splitting up was permissible, were there multiple enemies (in the 11th’s own code of honour, hogging all the fun for yourself was, really, just rude); fighting alongside one another was permissible, to watch and feed off the mounting bloodlust in the air; but never fighting back to back.
If you could not win on your own, then you did not deserve to win at all.
It was simple and embodied in their own captain, who did not so much as know the name of his own sword; in his underlings who shoved such relationships to the side and buried them in the hopes that no one would ever see.
And they kept the secrets so well that they did not even see how they were cheating.
Tiny hands clinging to black coats, digging carelessly through pockets to uncover the candy left there for her to find; feathers brushing red war-marks and the taste of blood on lips; the scraping of steel easing into peals of laughter; sugar and sake and the warmth of skin as they inspected one another’s wounds.
