I should have guessed - the word of the day: "Inamorata", from the Italian "innamorata".
Which reminds me of a really funny scene that was acted out in my Intro Theatre class a while back. See, in the Dark Ages in Europe, there were these little travelling family troupes, known as Commedia dell'arte troupes, who did these little plays based on references in the community that they were playing for. However, they had these stock characters:
- The Innamorati (lovers) - in our play, they had the names Isabella and Lellio and the actors (theatre TAs) constantly addressed each other by the names simperingly.
- Zanni (servants) - the most famous of which was named Arlecchio
- Masters (old guys) - who were blocking characters and kept lovers from each other.
In other words, your basic soap opera *g*
Other interesting characters:
- Pantalone - a greedy miser who lusts for everything, even the innamorati (he had a mask with a crooked nose) and our prof described him as a "Mr Burns" (from the Simpsons) type, if you need a visual.
- Dottore - the know-it-all scholar who talks but has no idea what’s going on
- Capitano - a braggart warrior who pushes people around [Cowardly Lion]
I miss that class. [/reminiscing]
Happy Valentine's to those who celebrate it!
