Media Reviews: Prison Sex
I’ve recently been watching a lot of HBO’s prison soap-opera “Oz” on DVD. I actually saw the first two seasons when they were originally aired, but stopped watching television altogether by the time the third season came out. I could say a lot of things about this show. It fascinates me. The political motivations behind the choice of characters portrayed by the writers is at times educational, and the libidinous power structure involved in the whole prison social system, (which is worth a thesis in itself, especially when you consider the psychological effects of life without the possibility of parole) but this post is just about my favourite rape scene.
I’ve talked about it before. The scene is notorious in my particular workplace, because it takes place in the prison kitchen. I ran into my old boss a couple of weeks ago, and he hooked me up with the first two seasons on DVD. I watched them straight through, because frankly, I needed a vacation. The results were spellbinding. I was certainly in an agitated psychological state by the end of it. There was actually a brief period where I noticed an acute fear of arousal which was very similar to the feeling which set me down the whole path which has been followed in the sexual revolution thread, but strange to feel while watching something that I knew had been on TV. I was itching for the third season by the end of it, but I didn’t have that. It was pretty late when I finished, so for just that evening, I settled for American History X, because I could be certain that I would see non-consensual sodomy take place behind bars. The craving, I was sure, would be satisfied. I was profoundly disappointed. The American History X rape scene is a christmas card by comparison to Adebisi fucking the mob boss. Its not just that he swivels his hips, (the nazi in AHX holds them totally straight, like a badly animated video game sprite) its the headphones. There’s this one gesture where Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s character reaches up to hold his earpiece in place, to ensure that he is getting maximum tunage while nailing this dude’s ass. There’s something truly perfect about that which makes this the greatest rape scene of all time.
