That reminds me of something Grant Morrison said several years back. He mentioned how life grew out of the Earth when its atmosphere was filled largely with ammonia and other noxious chemicals that would kill a lot of life that lives on the planet today. His point was that the Earth doesn't have to worry about pollution, because "some trilobites will grow out of anything" we pour into the environment. It's humans who have to worry about a planet poisonous to them. Nature will survive even if humans don't.
