I take issue with this question. I'm still going to be alive in fifty years (God willing)...so where's the fun in that? I might as well keep three things with me and then I won't have to go through the trouble of opening a box in fifty years. So, let's say 100 years.
There are circumstances which need to be established in order to justify my decision. Is life worth it if we don't imagine we will one day be important. Known. Famous? Let's say I write my best-selling novel, or my hit movie script. Let's say I win the Nobel prize. In this potential future I am someone that is heard of. Remembered. So here is what I would put in my box:
- My book/script/film/prize-winning masterpiece (just in case whoever is opening the box doesn't know how important I am)
- A letter to my descendants
- A copy of The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri (just in case there has been some kind of apocalyptic event and Lahiri's work was lost)
I suppose #3 is controversial. After all...if there has been an apocalypse perhaps I should enclose a more important book like The Origin of Species or something. But this is MY box and I pick The Namesake. Deal.
