Title: you are something to me, I just don't want to name it
Fandom: Gossip Girl
Characters: Blair on Dan

Humphrey is...

Humphrey is an anomaly.

He's like a puzzle piece that won't fit into the damn place it's supposed to belong. That one piece that you find out later belonged somewhere else and not the place you tried to fit it in.

However...

He's Brooklyn. With the crime and the ratty people. With the weird stores and the multitude of ethnic eateries. He's subway trains and gum on the bottom of your shoe. He's low rent, no class Brooklyn.

So he should have fit snuggly into the space she tried to put him in. He should have fit in the place marked Serena's on and off again boyfriend/know-it-all goodie goodie/possibly disease filled boy she only spoke to when she absolutely needed to or when she had to correct him.

But he didn't. It looked like he did but she was wrong.

She finds herself coming over to his loft more and more.

It's been about two months since her first visit and now she has a change of clothes over there because sometimes Humphrey has mishaps with the kitchenware and water.

One day she even finds herself contemplating sleepwear. There was that time she fell asleep on the couch. But then she thinks about his offer to lend her sweat pants and a shirt if that happens again and she wipes the thought from her mind. If his sweat pants are anything like his hoodies then maybe, if she doesn't break out in hives just looking at them first. And she had already worn one of his shirts before so that wasn't such a big deal.

It's just...

It's just that she's UES royalty. She's got a jeweled headband and minions to prove it. So this ~thing, whatever it is, shouldn't be happening let alone weirdly making sense.

Dan and Blair shouldn't be in the same sentence. There shouldn't be an 'and' connecting their names. She had always assumed that the closest they would ever come to being referenced together in anway would be through a comma. Punctuation being the only form of "together" acceptable. But they are connected and she does find it acceptable despite her first misgivings.

Sometimes she thinks the only reason she hangs out with him is because for once she wants something alien to her. He's not an expectation. He's so far from an expectation in her life that they still get surprised looks from people when they go somewhere together.

And sometimes she thinks that maybe it's the way she feels around him.

He makes her happy.

Her lips know more smiles than smirks nowadays and she likes that.

He gets her in a way that most poeple can't or won't. There's a word for people like him but she refuses to use it. She knows it though. It starts with an 'f' and ends with a 'd', there are four little letters that make their home right inbetween them.

It's nice being with someone you aren't in love with and who isn't in love with you. She's never really had that. Dan used to call them the incestuous foursome and he was right. They were all a little in love with each other. That's what happens when you've known each other for so long that you don't remember a time when you didn't. There's an invisible thread wrapped around their pinkies and they don't know how to break it. Not even their cruel actions have been able to sever the tie.

That's intense.

Being with Dan isn't intense.

Being with Dan is like being alone in a big room full of books and you don't know which one to pick. It's whelming and frustrating but it's also comfortable, it's what she wants.

There's just something about him.

Humphrey is...

He just is.
