Thank you, Web Hosting, for starting the week with a huge sucking sound.

The mission of my employer's Web Hosting department is providing -- you guessed it -- web hosting services. They've got Linux servers running (presumably) Apache, PHP, and MySQL. When everything's working life is good. Then there's days like today.

Over the weekend Web Hosting finally upgraded to PHP 5. (Can you say 'way overdue?') Somehow they FUBARed one of the MySQL databases that provides content to a department's site that I maintain. Thirty of 38 tables are missing. No sign of them anywhere. This effectively crippled the site, which is mission-critical to the department. Thank god most of the people in that department are reasonable. No one's panicking yet.

Web Hosting's reply to my "WTF, guys? Where's my f*cking data?" email* was "We're looking at it... We'll get it restored ASAP."

Yeah. You do that.

* FWIW, my email was civil. Yelling and being rude won't get database restored any faster.

UPDATE: The tables have been restored. At least they weren't down for long.

griping, work
