Forumitis

Sep 12, 2010 13:25

This is a wargaming syndrome, though it applies to video games too.  Basically, Forumitis occurs when you go onto a forum to find answers, instead of a straight answer, people on the forum point out the obvious, or they tell you what was true in version 2.0, which would be cool, but we're in 5.4 now, that good old 2.0 advice won't help you.  Eventually, you get infected with this syndrome, as other people ask for advice, and you and other people point out what to use, but not how to do it.

This can confuse people and turn them off, and the smaller the forum, the more likely it is that you will catch it.  40k has a lot of this, especially since the community is very small, and there is no official forum.  So the question is, what's the cure?

The cure is spreading the word, not just the obvious, anyone can do that.  "I'm going to tell you how this works, and here are examples"  A poster on one forum got it, he posted tactics, but also said "Here, this is a battle report I made, read that, and notice where my units are"  I don't have to 'reinvent' the game, I just have to make sure noobs don't get discouraged.  When I was a noob I read a ton (this is what I do before I buy a game, I read everything) so I was already a victim of forumitis, fortunately, there were some players in my area who actually knew what they were doing, and taught me some of the good tactics, and showed me a blog.

This was one of the blogs I had read before, mostly I stuck with SaimHann as that was the first one I found, YTTH has a distinctive style (and they swear a lot, I don't happen to be a fan of that writing style)  For a while he just ranted, and then, he started posting pictures, battle reports, "I will show you how this works"  Hey may not say it in the best way possible, but he's got a point,  This rant is basically to say, I'm going to spread the word too.  Reason I linked this article in particular, was the call-out he made.
I've thought about posting 40k stuff on this journal for a while, maybe other wargames too, but now I'm committed.  I'll even start today :P

advice, blogs, thoughts, warhammer, tactics
