Why I didn't write about this sooner?
Otakon 2005 was my reality check from the lovely dream that was Otakon 2004- nerds come in all shapes and sizes, spending lots of money is a very very easy thing to do, and that commuting all the way to Baltimore every morning is a big hassle. For the most part I enjoyed myself- I bought lots of crap, met an interesting camera guy, and didn't eat like a litte piggy. There wasn't as many anime programs I wanted to watch like last year but I did get interested in Cromatie High (I think that's how its spelled). The pick up badge line was unbelievably long and most of the time we were standing in the pouring rain. The guys in front of us smelled bad and there was almost no space to shelter us from the rain. But inside I saw several people from school like Luis and Elona, who was so kind to go with her sister.
The friend from last year that I bitched about? I spent most of my time with her. She was dressed as a PSO character or whatever and she had asked me earlier in the year did I want to share a hotel room with her. I said no. Again big mistake. So while she can drop off her stuff at her hotel room and go to the rave every night I was stuck in a car for fourty minutes. Not that I'm not greatful for the ride but it was a little taxing to go back and fourth every day (we didn't go on sunday)
Here's the special part. I rarely consider race at Otakon, I go there to get away from that type of crap, but I (and others) did notice that there were more black people attending the con than last year. Yet the "normal" black people outside the con kept asking us questions like what was going on and why are we dressed the way we are. Most people were innocently curious but this one asshole told us that "we should be ashamed of ourselves" and "we ought to know better." Seriously, who in the hell gave this guy the right to question what we do or why we do it. Screw his ignorant ass.
