Summary: What steps does Byakuya take after Renji and Rukia's relationship is known?

Disclaimer: I don’t own Bleach, Tite Kubo does. This is a work of fan fiction, and means no harm. I make no money writing this. Mentions of the movie The Quiet Man also are not mine. I have seen other stories regarding Renji and Rukia and what a relationship would involve. Hollow Charm by Magicsmith, and Lady and the Tramp by Anna and Gal. I used ideas inspired from these stories in this chapter so I want to give credit where it’s due.

Ever since the night of Rukia’s surprise promotion party, he had carefully observed interactions between the couple. Whenever off duty he would meet with them to arrange times for their ‘dates’. Most of these occasions he insisted on tagging along as a ‘chaperone’ or prevailing upon others to accompany them.

Despite their frustration, Renji and Rukia played along. It was a miracle he even agreed to allow them to see each other. They were not about to sabotage things now simply because it was on his terms not theirs. Therefore, when Byakuya asked to see them both the morning afterwards he had a pile of papers on his library desk with two chairs set opposite the large wooden piece of furniture.

Rukia already sat in one chair, set six inches from the other that Renji came and sat in. She sat with hands folded on her lap, and Renji tucked his in the sleeves of his shihakusho, unsure of what else to do with them.

“Abarai, I have here an important document you must peruse. While you are reading it I must speak with both of you,” Byakuya said after clearing his throat.

“What is it sir?” asked Renji.

“As I said the previous night I will still expect both of you to train your abilities to face me at a future time and place to be determined. In the meantime I have agreed to allow you to court my sister with the intention to marry Abarai,” Byakuya said. “I’ve spent a considerable amount of time writing up the necessary contract.”

Renji felt himself floating off the chair. He stammered, “What… what did you say?”

“He’s agreed to the engagement,” Rukia said quietly, her eyes alone showing the excitement. Renji sat bold upright in his chair, his eyes wide with shock.

He almost leapt out of the chair with a whoop of joy, but bit his tongue in the effort to suppress it. Instead, he fumbled with his hands, feeling sweat beading on his forehead. He stammered, “So that’s why ya called for me sir? You’re gonna let us go through with it?”

“Indeed. However, this document contains the conditions of that agreement. I have spoken to the elders of the family on this matter, and they agreed reluctantly to allow you to prove yourself, Abarai. Considering that Rukia was adopted into the family, they saw it as extenuating circumstances. Since you are from the same place of origin, it seemed logical for them to assent. However there are conditions and terms,” Byakuya said, shuffling the papers.

“Yes sir, of course! What do I have to do?” Renji asked, and Rukia saw his eyes practically gleaming like hot coals.

“First, as you saw the night before you are allowed to see my sister, but only on chaperoned outings. I will decide on the escort and the activities deemed appropriate. You may suggest a chaperone as well Abarai,” said Byakuya.

“I guess I can live with that sir. Figured you’d be watching me like a hawk around her. Does this mean you’re gonna be there every time we eat dinner or go for a walk, Captain?” Renji asked.

“Indeed, Abarai,” said Byakuya with a slight smile of amusement. “In turn you are permitted to accompany my sister in a variety of Kuchiki clan activities and outings.”

“We can ask you if activities we think would be suitable dates are acceptable, can we Brother?” Rukia asked.

“Of course Sister. Yet I will also accompany you on them, or you will select a chaperone and I will as well if I cannot attend,” said he.

“Can the chaperone be anyone?” Renji asked, feeling a bit of hope.

“I suppose I can allow your friends from squad 11, but I would prefer your schoolmates, Abarai,” said Byakuya. “Perhaps Vice Captain Kira and Vice Captain Momo…”

“Or perhaps third Seat Kiyone?” suggested Rukia, still feeling giddy herself.

“You will read this, Abarai. It outlines the finer points of the engagement/courtship agreement. Also affixed are the terms of the marriage contract,” said Byakuya.

“Is this um, necessary?” Rukia asked.

“You know the answer to that, Sister,” Byakuya said with a laborious sigh. “You wished to be serious, I am being serious. I have bent far enough as it is. I cannot break tradition entirely.”

“How did they agree to a commoner I wonder,” Renji mumbled.

“I had hinted before as to the reasons. It is my responsibility Abarai to groom you to the task of an acceptable suitor. A Vice Captain is a step below my sister’s status, but is possibly enough to be overlooked in favor of your common upbringing. It is all spelled out plainly,” Byakuya said, tapping the stack of papers. Renji extended his hand when Byakuya carefully picked up the sheaf and passed it across the desk.

“It’s… rather heavy,” Renji mumbled, taking the document and carefully turning the pages. Patiently Byakuya folded his hand on the desk, while Rukia glanced anxiously at him.

“Do you have any questions regarding this, Abarai?”

“Er yes sir...” Renji coughed. “It’s under section B… under ‘implicit trust’.”

“Ahh. That means I assume I can trust you to refrain from inappropriate activities here, and when you will return on assignment as whilst in the living world?” Byakuya asked the young couple.

“Um just how inappropriate?” Renji asked. Rukia glared at him.

“Ignore him, Brother,” she sighed. “We’re both adults and we know the rules. And the penalties if we do not abide by tradition.”

“But it doesn’t say what it means,” Renji pointed at the paper, shaking his head. “And Captain Kuchiki DID say if I had questions now is the time to ask them.”

“Renji,” Rukia sighed, putting her head in her hands. She hid her face, blushing profusely.

“Your question is relevant, Abarai,” Byakuya said with a hint of amusement at his sister’s outburst. “But you must take great care in phrasing what you do not understand about my limitations regarding your engagement.”

“Well sir, I wanted to know just what I’m allowed to do around Rukia and with her, while we’re alone together, that’s all. So I don’t… well screw things up and have ya say no,” Renji said as clearly as he could.

“Well asked. My answer is as follows. I can make an appendix that would say something to the effect of this: While in Rukia’s company, alone you are to abide by the rules of polite society. You may hold hands and share chaste displays of affection. However you are not to engage in lewd displays of unsightly behavior. Furthermore you are to refrain from activities relegated a husband and wife engage in after marriage.”

“Ah, I see,” Renji coughed. “So um, holding her hand, and hugging her is okay? But kissing around other people is out?”

“Renji,” Rukia yelped.

“No, you are wise to ask,” Byakuya silenced her with a raised hand. “Have you any more questions, Abarai?”

“Uh sir well… in front of Rukia I can’t continue to ask,” he coughed, blushing brightly.

“Renji you’re hopeless!” Rukia protested.

“Rukia sister, leave us,” Byakuya said quietly. “Abarai asks for clarification on the terms of engagement. It shows his intent to honor tradition and does him merit. I trust that he knows how to phrase things delicately, but you are requested to leave while we continue our discussion till I send for you.”

“Very well Brother, I shall,” Rukia sighed, inclining her head.

“You are dismissed Rukia. I shall speak to you later myself,” Byakuya said. Sighing she turned and glared at Renji before leaving. He bit his lip, staring at the wall in embarrassment while Byakuya fingered his chin.

“Sorry sir if I overstepped a line,” Renji apologized, clutching the marriage contract in his hands.

“You should have waited for a more private appointment to raise this subject,” Byakuya said disapprovingly. “However, you show you are learning the significance of what you are about to undertake.”

“I just don’t want to screw up, Sir. I don’t want to make Rukia or yer family look bad,” Renji confirmed. He carefully set the papers down in front of his captain again.

“That is a prudent choice. So you wish me to spell out how you are to behave when alone with my sister. Including such acts that are permitted as well as forbidden. Very well I shall make myself quite clear now Rukia is elsewhere.”

“Thank you sir. Sorry again for being… well… ahem…” Renji coughed, continuing to blush profusely.

“I once charged you with protecting Rukia’s virtue. By any means necessary, whether it involved your personal supervision or those of Squad six. You have successfully performed this duty. The Ryoka despite his boorishness has also shown restraint which raises his credibility slightly in my eyes,” Byakuya continued, steel blue eyes fixing into Renji’s brown ones.

“However to the list of acceptable actions during courtship in Kuchiki tradition I may add the following: Strolling arm in arm is acceptable. Chaste kisses to the cheek or hand preferably are acceptable. Sitting side by side is appropriate. Holding hands while walking or sitting in polite conversation is considered acceptable. Marginally acceptable are activities such as a kiss on the lips or an embrace, but only in limited company whit great discretion.”

“How about… in private?” Renji asked.

“You are permitted to kiss upon the lips or embrace with great restraint. You are NOT permitted to engage in any activities that would compromise my sister’s virtue or virginity,” said Byakuya.

“Understood,” Renji nodded. “But sir…”

“What is your question Abarai?”

“Rukia can… protect herself. She wouldn’t let any man near her, except me,” Renji clarified. “I’m the only one who…”

“Why do you think I allowed you to occupy the same room as my sister unsupervised? It was a test of your ability at self restraint,” Byakuya said carefully.

“A test sir?” Renji swallowed hard. “Sir…”

“If you have something to say Abarai, speak now without reprimand,” Byakuya said, voice lowering to a dead calm.

“What if… I kissed her?” he asked quietly.

“I had surmised you would if left alone together,” Byakuya said carefully.

“But as long as I have not… compromised her… virtue… or um… do what married folks do, then it’s all right?” Renji asked.

“I trust you have not,” Byakuya frowned.

“Then kissing her in private and embracing her is all right? Rukia wouldn’t let me, and I’d sure as hell know better because if I was stupid enough you’d slice me to ribbons with Senbonzakura. Plus I don’t wanna dishonor her…” Renji quickly said.

“Your fear is well placed, Abarai,” Byakuya observed with a nod.

“And um… as long as clothes stay on and both feet stay on the floor?” Renji asked.

“An odd colloquialism?”

“Well it’s a bad joke. That’s what Ichigo’s father says. Keep both feet on the floor and nobody gets thrown out the window,” said Renji. “When girls and boys study together.”

“He sounds also as if he is a wise man,” Byakuya nodded.

“He’s crazy,” Renji whispered, shaking his head. “And worries me more than… than you do sir. No offense.”

“I see. None taken. You’re wise to be wary of me, Abarai, considering who I am,” Byakuya chuckled, causing Renji to exhale with some relief.

“Funny thing sir is I saw a movie not too long ago in the living world about courting, and what a guy could and couldn’t do,” Renji whispered.

“What was the name of the film?” Byakuya asked.

“Um… it was a John Wayne film. Called the Quiet Man. A guy goes back to Ireland where he’s from originally. Moves into his family's old cottage on a farm next to the most powerful man in the village. He falls in love with the man’s sister,’ Renji began.

“Interesting,” Byakuya said, with a gleam in his eye.

“Well turns out he manages to ask the brother for her hand in marriage. But they gotta court according to laws an’ tradition. And that means no touching… no hugging or kissing, and they gotta be chaperoned,” Renji continued.

“It would seem a tradition much in keeping with Kuchiki clan law,” Byakuya nodded appreciatively. “What happened next?”

“They married. But the girl didn’t get her dowry, and she got so angry cause her husband wouldn’t fight the brother for it. So she refused to am… she refused the marriage bed with him,” said Renji.

“What caused the brother not to honor the agreement?” Byakuya frowned.

“He was a mean spirited man. Didn’t like the fact the guy was an outsider. He agreed to the marriage only cause he wanted to marry a wealthy widow. But couldn’t’ till his sister was married off,” Renji sighed.

“A dubious practice but understandable. Yet why would he not release his sister’s dowry?” asked Byakuya interested.

“Not quite sure. But maybe cause he could,” said Renji. “Cause he was stingy.”

“He would seem to have little honor,” Byakuya snorted.

“Well turns out that the wife is gonna leave her husband if he doesn’t stand up to the brother. So the man goes and drags his wife back before she can leave him… and goes to face the brother. The brother gives him the money, and he throws it into the fire,” said Renji.

“Did he?” Byakuya asked his eyes a bit wide.

“Then he throws a punch at the brother and they fight,” Renji said. “The whole village watches…”

“Why wouldn’t the man fight in the first place?” Byakuya demanded.

“Because he killed a man. He was a boxer, a prize fighter. And he swore not to raise his fist to kill another man,” said Renji.

“He sounds as if he were an idealistic fool. Yet he does himself credit in defending the honor of his family and wife,” Byakuya said appreciatively. “Yet how did the fight end?”

“Both of ‘em walked home as allies, a bit… drunk,” Renji laughed. “And I guess you could say they lived happily ever after. Till the brother married himself that is and had to follow the courting rules himself.”

“Indeed,” Byakuya chuckled, showing more emotion in those few minutes then Renji had seen him in ages.

“It kinda annoyed me at first ta see it. But then it made more sense. But romance movies, eh,” Renji admitted, and shrugged.

“The brother was far from an honorable man,” Byakuya sniffed unimpressed. “Were I he, I would have honored my end of the bargain and granted the dowry.”

“I’d hoped you would,” said Renji quietly. “Cause I wasn’t sure you’d even agree to me marryin’ Rukia in the first place. But you’re a more honorable man then that guy ever was.”

“So you sought advice in a human film? For guidance in your present situation?” asked Byakuya, his eyes narrowed slightly.

“Yeah sir. Sorry, no disrespect indented.”

“But unlike the protagonist in this film, you willingly faced and defied me for what you perceived to be impunity upon my sister,” Byakuya pointed out. “You are a far better man than he.”

“Thank you sir, but ya didn’t have to say it,” Renji laughed lightly.

“And when on the subject of politeness you are to accompany me in courtly business and social affairs for the new few months. So I will continue to instruct you on proper table manners among other things,” Byakuya said quietly. Renji swallowed hard and suppressed the urged to roll his eyes.

“If you insist sir,” Renji sighed. He could tell this wasn’t going to be easy at all, even if Byakuya’s opinion of him seemed to have improved.

“If you wish I will amend the document with more specific definitions before you sign, Abarai,” Byakuya offered.

“That’d be good sir,” Renji nodded, just wondering what he was getting into.

In addition to Byakuya serving as chaperone to ensure his good behavior, Renji underwent the most rigorous trainings in etiquette by Byakuya on every aspect of his behavior. His duty times were filled with hours of dos and don’ts. Such as today.

“Abarai, remember what you do when you first sit down to lunch?” Byakuya said that day at lunch. Together they sat in an elaborate dining facility, complete with ivory chopsticks, the best china
Badly Renji wanted to rest his elbow on the table but he forced himself to sit up stiffly, imitating the posture of the noble across from him. Spending more and more time around his Captain was simultaneously frustrating, and entertaining.

“Wait for the food to be served Captain, then for the host to eat first?” Renji said, hand poised above his chopsticks.

Byakuya nodded, confirming, “Correct. And what do you NOT do under any circumstance?”

“Forget to say please n’ thank you, don’t do any inappropriate… um business at the table…”

After bowing, two attendants brought forth a tray bearing two bowls of soup. Not making eye contact or even showing their faces, they placed the servings before both men. Renji tilted his head in the same manner as Byakuya, his body shivering from the effort to stay still. How did that man do this every day? Oh, he was born with a ramrod posture.

“Damn how did Rukia put up with this 24 seven?” Renji wondered, glancing down at the steaming hot soup. His stomach rumbled, hands shivering in his lap so he folded them to resist the urge to grab the china ladle and start slurping it down.

“What are the three acceptable topics in polite company?” Byakuya then asked expression neutral.

“Weather, health, business, and gardening?” Renji asked. He forced himself not to smile, or even frown. Just keep a neutral look that was not fierce or intimidating. Pretend he was a statue….

“Gardening is an appropriate fallback,” Byakuya said, sipping at his tea. Renji mumbled and reached for his cup, forcing his left hand to stay on his lap.

“Mmm, so that’s why ya have me goin’ to ikebana lessons with Capt. Unohana?” Renji asked, sipping his tea. Byakuya nodded slowly, pleased he had not slurped.

“Indeed. It seems they have done an adequate job of preparing the first course,” he answered, reaching for his ladle.

Renji raised his hand, carefully lifting the utensil with his fingers. Staring straight ahead, he kept his eyes on Byakuya, hoping he would not spill all over his cleaned uniform. Instead of finishing the entire spoonful, he tasted a small portion, hoping his stomach wouldn’t hurt from the lack of food.

“It’s… nice,” Renji commented, hating this whole farce. He was only doing it for Rukia’s sake. Byakuya nodded, gracefully raising the spoon to his lips and sipping a minute amount.

“Though it does lack a certain seasoning.”

“Probably needs salt?” Renji tried, wondering if he was going to be reprimanded again.

“Agreed. You are allowed to partake in slightly larger portions, Abarai,” Byakuya said, noticing how Renji still ate from the same spoonful for the past two minutes.

“Ah… right,” he murmured, finishing the rest.

“Have you completed the rosters for next duty rotation?”

“Third seat’s in charge of it. I have made adjustments ya wanted for the next two weeks. And for the time I’m gonna… going to be in the living world,” Renji reported. He was sure to finish each mouthful before saying anything between spoonfuls.

“Captain Hitsugaya will be in command of the mission. Joining him will be his vice captain Matsumoto. Captain Zaraki has approved for his third seat Madrame, fifth seat Asigawaya to join the expeditionary team. You of course will represent squad six, and Rukia will represent squad 13. I will expect daily reports.”

“Right sir. You’ve got it… I mean understood Captain,” Renji corrected himself.

“Abarai, you need not correct every word. Simply correct your behavior. I did not intend that you abandon all aspects of your individuality in this undertaking,” Byakuya suddenly said, pushing aside his soup bowl.

“Begging your pardon sir, it’s just difficult to know what you want. I was simply imitating you,” Renji shrugged.

“That is flattering but unnecessary. Utilizing myself as your role model is of course appropriate. Yet there are limits to it. What you should strive for is refining your own personality and acumen. “

“That’s the problem sir. It feels unnatural to me. Rukia just takes to it so easily. Me… I just…”

“Your willingness to attempt this is proof of your determination. In time you will find such actions become second nature, if practiced laboriously,” Byakuya said with warmer tone to his voice. Sympathy perhaps, Renji wondered, or was it his imagination?

“It goes beyond balancing books on my head sir. Just… even with the classes. Doesn’t it ever seem… well… like you’d want to try seeing how it was fer me?” Renji asked carefully.

“Not at the present time. Although I do express curiosity for the reasons behind certain habits, and the lack of motivation to modify them to reflect your current promotion.”

“I am who I am sir. The men n’ women serving me can spot someone faking it miles off. Guess they can’t take me seriously if I ain… If I’m not who they knew coming in. Even though I’m yer vice captain I’m still Renji Abarai from Rukong. But when I’m around Rukia in society I’ll play the game if it’s what it takes.”

“What I see to achieve here Abarai is equipping you with skills necessary for your survival in society. What you chose to do with them is your affair, but every noble impresses his own stamp upon his repsonsibilies. Why you should not seek to imitate me is because you see a role you must play. Rather you should adjust your thinking to perceive manners and etiquette as tools.”

“Like fighting skills. I understand that, sir,” Renji huffed impatiently. “But even when I fought I had to decide what techniques worked for me.”

“As you have achieved Bankai in your own manner, you found that there were other means to achieve it. Relevant and unique to the needs of your Zanpakuto. However, the basic principles remain the same. When you see Rukia in society you still see her own personality yet it is refined. I see to refine you Renji Abarai, not replace you with a clone of myself.”

Renji nodded, feeling the frustration and elation mingling together hearing the Captain's words. “I know sir, but it doesn’t come naturally to me like it does you.”

“I was educated since birth,” Byakuya said. “In your case you learned rules to becoming a Vice captain. Your manners must change, not your methods of speaking. If you refrain from cursing and colorful metaphors, your accent is acceptable. Alternatively, the clothing you select. They are all acquired skills. You observe Kira and Kyoraku do you not?”

“Kira’s a noble as is Capt. Kyoraku. But they’re not… well they’re not you.”

“They know the time and place for manners. With your men, you need no such formalities. Yet with Rukia and in clan Kuchiki business you will. You must learn when such behaviors are appropriate. What you do on your own time is your affair provided you make no public spectacle of yourself.”

“Huh, that’s the closest you’ve come to admitting I’m not so shabby after all,” Renji chuckled, keeping his voice down.

“Do not press it,” Byakuya warned, with an impatient snort, still dignified.

A servant collected their bowls, stopping only to place the next servings before them. This time Renji was so engaged in conversation he could restrain his appetite. Byakuya reached out a pair of chopsticks, noticing Renji was moving a fraction of an instant behind him.

“Doubtless my sister will continue to have a challenge in educating you for your role as her future husband,” Byakuya sighed shaking his head. “However you at least see the need for what you would deem frivolous manners and meaningless customs.”

“For Rukia I’ll do what it takes. That is why I’m sitting here now, sir. Even if it doesn’t feel like me in a million years. If Rukia can do it I can too,” he laughed lightly.

“If nothing else you are stubborn, Abarai,” Byakuya nodded. “Yet you will find that adapting these manners and acumen could be beneficial to achieving captaincy at some point in the future.”

“We’ll see sir,” Renji smiled, knowing a left-handed complement when he heard one.

“You have achieved Bankai, but you have yet to learn the politics involved with captaincy. You should consider my lessons as a further skill to be mastered. Surely when you learned swordplay, you at last developed your own skills as unique as your Zanpakuto. In the game of courtly affairs, it is a fine balance. I am neither my grandfather nor my predecessors."

“Such as whether or not you wear the Kenseikan?” Renji asked, shoving a piece of cantaloupe past his lips.

“My grandfather chose not to adopt them. I however have found them an integral part of my wardrobe. Even among nobles, styles come and go. That is my expression of individuality. Much in the fashion you chose to wear headbands or sunglasses.”

“Heh, touché,” Renji chuckled. For the rest of the meal, he found himself enjoying the food far more. Not to mention the company of his captain, who wasn’t as stuffy as he had originally thought. At any rate, he had Rukia’s same dubious skills in art.

Endnote: Contains spoilers regarding Hollow Charm and Lady and the Tramp. If you don’t wish to read, please consider yourself warned! I used ideas from the following stories in this one so I want to give credit where it’s due!

In Lady and the Tramp, there’s mention of a marriage contract, when Byakuya tries to arrange a marriage between Rukia and Kira Izuru. In addition, the issue of nobility is proposed as a reason against Rukia and Renji getting married.

In Hollow Charm, the possibility of Renji and Rukia pursuing marriage is also explored. Byakuya agrees but only under certain conditions. Namely with Byakukya watching Renji carefully. Renji cannot cross certain lines with Rukia, and Byakuya holds him to that to the extreme.
