WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS from RECENT ARC!
Where had Uryuu gone? Sure, she knew where Chad and Orihime were. She remembered getting the tickets from Shunsui Kyoraku, the head captain of the Shinigami, and both Keigo and Mizuiro had taken them. Yet both of them had split up to try to get the hollow’s attention off her. Without the shinigami to regulate and send them on, the city was rife with hollow attacks. Fortunately, Urahara’s store had held them off. Leaving Tatsuki to deal with one while Keigo and Mizuiro called for help or defended her elsewhere. They had missed this one.
Hollow poison was something that cut deep into Tatsuki’s shoulder. The Val Tudo champion could barely stop herself from succumbing. Red haze framed her field of vision the minute she tried to move her own arm and it moved on its own will.
She had to pick such a time to take a day off with friends while Ryuuken was laid up busy in the hospital. Of all the times, she had been careful to keep clear of hollows during her pregnancy. A gold band gleamed in place on the third finger of her left hand. That and the curve of her belly under the extra large shirt and loose jeans told her story. Four months along and already feeling the changes to her body.
With a screechy voice the white masked hollow laughed. The noise gritted Tatsuki’s nerves like nails on a chalkboard. “You’re a troublesome pain, human. Stay still while I such out your soul…”
“Won’t… let you take me over,” Tatsuki gritted between clenched teeth.
“Then put an end to your own life, you pain in the ass,” hissed the hollow inside. Hands flew towards her throat before Tatsuki could properly stop them.
“And your baby’s soul will also be mine…”
He had just said the wrong thing. Her foot slashed out, connecting with a force that could crack bones. Instead, the hollow let out a piercing scream. Thankfully, none of her friends were around because she had run away the instant the hollow had bitten her. Slammed against the wall her legs would not allow her to move at the same time her own hands tightened around her throat. Tatsuki strained against this, screaming at her own brain to obey her words.
“I won’t let you destroy me, or my baby,” Tatsuki gritted, forcing her own hands to stop from clenching harder. It took all of her summoned will applied to those limbs and fingers not to squeeze but they strained just from this. Unclench the fingers, pull them off, and pull her hands back. Step by agonizingly slow step her limbs moved under mostly her own control.
Two bright blinding flashes zinged from the alley, both slamming towards the middle of her hands. Though she anticipated great pain, the arrows hit precisely in a way that would cause minimal damage. Between the metacarpals of the second and third fingers. Enough to stop her and snap her from the control of the creature. Light flashed off a pair of glasses that Tatsuki was never gladder to see the owner off. No eyes were visible beneath the glowing lenses.
“Step away from her filthy hollow,” said the stern voice. “And I’ll make your departure swift.”
“Quincy… I thought you were all off destroying Soul Society!” hissed the hollow.
“Shows what you know,” Ryuuken said. He turned away just enough for the white suited figure to fire an arrow right into its body. It shattered to spiritual bits, being destroyed. Ryuuken pushed up his glasses in distaste while Tatsuke struggled not to cry out. The pain in her hands was nothing to resisting the hollow poison inside her.
“Tatsuki, apart from the obvious pain from my arrow, are you in any other pain or discomfort?” Ryuuken asked, striding up to her.
“My hands hurt like hell, and my body is on fire,” she whispered, biting her lip.
“There is little shame in crying out,” Ryuuken muttered, reaching up to disperse the energy from the arrows now they had done their work. Tatsuki let her hands slide down, hissing from the pain. Reaching into his jacket pocket, Ryuuken pulled out a small first aid kit.
“What took you so long,” she whispered, fighting back tears.
“I would like you to slowly sit down,” he muttered, leaning down on the ground so he sat stiffly. He guided Tatsuki to sit down on his knee, so she would not touch the dirty street. Then he pulled off his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.
“Thank you for saving me, Ryuuken,” she whispered.
“You seem pleased to see me,” he said with a small smirk, gently cleaning each of the wounds he had caused before leaning in to deposit a kiss on each. “My apology for such crude methods but it was necessary to save your life and that of the baby.”
“I understand,” Tatsuki said. “But I still want to strangle you.”
“Are you otherwise unharmed?” he asked quietly.
She shook her head slowly, trying to steady her breathing while Ryuuken stopped the bleeding and bandaged the wounds. His white jacket around her shoulders helped to warm her and keep her from going in shock. Bending down, Ryuuken pulled a small vial out of his pocket in his pants and opened the contents. He then started to suck the poison out of the wound, and spit it out on the ground. Then he carefully injected the liquid into the same area. Tatsuke squeezed her eyes shut.
She heard the noise of a water bottle being opened, and the sound of water sloshing. The small plastic rim of a bottle was pressed to her mouth. Thirstily she sipped mouthfuls of the cool fresh water, which was labeled spring, but most likely came from a high tech filtration unit.
A soft pair of lips kissed her now moist mouth. It tasted of cigarettes. Against her lips, Ryuuken mumbled, “There. The antivenom I synthesized should purge your body of the hollow poison.”
“Who the hell are all these Quincy, and where’s Uryuu?” she whispered back. “The shinigami tell me that Ichigo won’t possibly be coming back and that…”
“Uryuu has betrayed us,” Ryuuken said distastefully. “He has gone over to the enemy’s side.”
“The hell…” Tatsuke gasped, shivering as Ryuuken finished bandaging her wounds.
Blue eyes flashed behind the glasses he pushed up with one finger. “My priority is helping to save the living, and that foremost includes you and the baby.”
“Ryuuken…” Tatsuki choked, squeezing her eyes shut, fisting her bandaged hands in frustration. “You can be such a cold bastard.”
His thin arms muscular and strong wrapped tightly around her before he graced her mouth with a kiss. Tatsuki wanted to struggle but feeling the movement fluttering inside her she felt her own throat tighten.
Ryuuken pulled back, kissing her forehead. She bit her bottom lip. “You being my wife should understand my reasons,” Ryuuken said simply.
“Choices,” she mumbled, shaking her head. Of course, she felt angry with Uryuu joining the enemy Quincy.
Again, the scant light reflected off his lenses. “My son can live with the consequences of his actions.”
“The so called King will NOT get his hands on my family. That is why the Quincy was supposed to die out in our generation,” Ryuuken whispered, helping her up as he rose to his feet. “My father and foolish son intended to perpetuate this ridiculous folly and look where it got them…”
Ryuuken bent down, slipped one hand under her knees and the other under her back. Tatsuki slid her arm around his neck though she opened her mouth to protest him carrying her. “I can walk, thank you!”
“Please be quiet. The baby is as much mine as yours, and if his mother is not taken care of, then it is useless effort,” Ryuuken snapped.
More ugly truths conflicted with the swarm of emotions in her gut. It did not help that the baby inside her had just given a healthy kick with its foot. Maybe it sensed her anger and placed it into similar frustration? “I know that but… damn it! He’s your son!”
“My opinion will not be swayed unless he sees the folly of his actions and returns. Till then he has made it clear he considers family ties merely a formality,” Ryuuken mumbled.
She gripped his shirt tightly and pulled on it. His silver white hair tickled her cheek. Already her belly curved with the weight of a five-month pregnancy. It was useless to argue with him sometimes and she felt too angry with Uryuu herself to play devil’s advocate. Therefore, she buried her face in his shoulder.
“Now we must get you somewhere safe where you can be protected. I won’t have my new family taken by that Juuha Bach,” said Ryuuken next while carrying her out of the alleyway into the light of the street lamps.
Not far away she saw the shape of his sports car. He set her down to lean against it only long enough so he could open the door already unlocked by his remote. Tatsuki half limped to the seat but he guided her the rest of the way stubbornly. “How can you be so calm and ready to just carry on after what’s happened?”
Ryuuken gave a bitter chuckle. “Living in peace is the best solution to ongoing war.”
Before she could protest, the door shut firmly so she saw his figure move away around the front. The car shifted from the effort he made to open the door, climb in, and close it again. “And that’s your answer to everything? Staying out of the conflict?”
He clucked his seatbelt into place once he helped Tatsuki adjust hers over her belly above and below. “It is. Someone has to treat the patients and casualties. To use my powers in more than a defensive way is being a hypocrite.”
“Sometimes even though I know you’re right, I hate it. I want to make YOU a casualty,” she half joked, though her brown eyes gleamed.
She felt his hand rest on her stomach again, and the responding kick. A small smirk twitched up the corners of his lips. “Feisty just like its mother.”
