A student teacher faced many challenges, but being an instructor at the academy seemed to suit Shikamaru rather well. Since Konoha was being rebuilt after the 4th great ninja war, they asked much of its younger generation. Naruto had heard about his friend's new mission since his 'granny' had reorganized many of the departments under Kakashi's new ideas.
So the sight of Shikamaru in front of a blackboard didn't surprise the blonde walking by the open classroom door. He had come by to check on his adoptive older brother Iruka, who led him all over the new place on a tour. Present on Naruto's shoulders that wasn't usually before was the vest of a chunin.
"Congratulations on getting your vest, Naruto," Iruka said with a proud smile as he slugged him on the back.
"I should be the one giving you congrats, Iruka sensei," Naruto chuckled, eyes shut in that heartwarming genuine grin Iruka knew was not fake. "Making Jonin as this school's principle!"
"I still teach a few classes to keep my hand in," Iruka reminded him, smiling. "After all someone's got to pass on the will of fire."
Naruto's infectious smile seemed to travel to all people seeing the two walk down the hall. They stepped into the classroom they had just stopped by. Peeking in Naruto whispered, "Can we sit in on Shika's class?"
Nodding Iruka whispered back, "Don't see why not."
Stealthily they entered the classroom and sat down in the back row. Down on the front chalkboard Shikamaru had already drawn five symbols Naruto knew very well now. Still wearing his bandanna on his sleeve Shikamaru lowered it and turned to face the class. He shoved his hands in his pockets and asked, "Now you know the five basic chakra natures, one of the combinations that's very rare is the First Hokage's wood style, exclusive to the Senju clan."
When the silent whisper crept through the class like a wave, Shikamaru glanced up to see two newcomers sitting in the back row. Why did his heart always speed up at sight of that troublesome blonde? today of all days he just had to drop in unnoticed. Despite this interruption Shikamaru kept his composure in the form of a serious frown. Still his eyes widened the slightest bit.
A hand went up, and Shikamaru nodded for the student to continue, "What about the ice nature of the Yuki clan?"
"That was a kekkei genkai like the wood style, but you could consider it a combination of wind and water," Shikamaru said clearing his throat. "But that used the generation of ice. But in the frost nation they manipulated water already present in the air..."
Then a girl wearing a green quipao dress waved her hand. "What's this thing about wind chakra being the rarest?"
"It's statistics. In some villages it's rare, but in the hidden Sand it's more common. Fire nature's common in hidden leaf. all depends on who lives where," Shikamaru said, rubbing his neck.
A small smirk twitched up the corners of his lips when he looked up in Naruto's direction. "Maybe Uzumaki san can tell us about his wind nature since he's paying us a visit?"
All necks swiveled around at the same to towards the place where the blonde jinchuriki and school principle sat behind their desks. Naruto winced a bit to Shikamaru's delight. Got him.
"Uh yeah, sure thing!" Naruto said brightly.
Whispers of, "the hero's gonna talk..." and "why's he in our class is he gonna fire Shikamaru sensei' spread to the Nara's ears.
With a wave of his arm, he motioned up front. "Uzumaki san, Why don't you come down here so my class doesn't have to strain their necks to see you, even if it is troublesome?"
"All right, all right, I gotcha," Naruto relented, rising from his chair. He made his way down the aisle amidst whisper and stares of amazement in the now silent class.
"He's got a chunin vest," Naruto heard one person whisper.
"Shh, he's the hero, he can hear you. Don't embarrass us idiot," whispered another.
Flashing his famous grin, Naruto waved and said brightly, "Hiya! Glad to see you all here Dattebayo."
Always he elicited frustration or charm around people leaving a lasting impression. Whether it was good or bad depended on the person he touched. That Uzumaki charisma was one power that Shikamaru always was aware of. People noticed Naruto no matter what. Shikamaru stood leaning against the board and murmured, "So, about that wind nature..."
"Oh yeah," Naruto chuckled, rubbing his neck. "I didn't know I was a wind at first till I'd been a genin for a few years."
All of the students mumbled and shook their heads. One student called out, "How's that work? We gotta know that right away."
"Well things sometimes went down when I was at the academy, but not everybody learns the same way," Naruto explained, not phased by the question. He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced at the student who'd asked the question.
"What's that mean?" asked the fuschia haired girl, poking her bottom lip out. "I thought you were a hero that..."
"Are you kidding, he trained under Lord Jiraya! He doesn't need the class like we do!" another called out.
"Now wait a minute!" Naruto suddenly snapped as he glared at the kid. "That's not the way it works! You should listen to your Shikamaru sensei the best you can! Just cause I didn't know chakra natures right away doesn't mean you don't haveta study."
Surprised, Shikamaru gave a small smirk at the mumbles and sighs of frustration. "What I mean is that you should do your best no matter what, and never give up even if school work is hard," Naruto clarified.
"I'm confused," one of the students mumbled.
"So was I, dattebayo," Naruto said as he looked in their direction. "But I know that people all learn differently and having a good sensei's important. But you gotta meet them halfway."
"How'd you learn you were a wind?" asked a student.
As if it wasn't a big deal Naruto waved a hand. "Chakra paper stuff.”
"Maybe you'd care to show them what happens with wind?" asked Shikamaru waving a piece he pulled out of his vest pocket.
Naruto's smile faded a bit but he nabbed the paper. "You're on. I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
"Troublesome," the Nara muttered closing his eyes, so Shikamaru simply pulled out a second piece and held onto it.
"Okay, watch everyone!" Naruto muttered, focusing his blue chakra into the paper. Everyone watched as it split down the middle, while Shikamaru's slowly sparked and caught fire.
"Shikamaru sensei I thought you were shadow chakra!" called the girl in the quipao dress.
Oh terrific. How many times am I going to have to hear THAT? the shadow nin wondered. Unable and unwilling to divulge the secret the Nara sighed. Eye twitching Shikamaru muttered, "Troublesome. Just because someone has one nature doesn't mean they don't have another. That's because of my clan."
"It's a kekkei genkai dummy," the girl grumbled.
"Oi! Enough of that!" Naruto snapped. "You pay attention and stop that now!"
Stunned, the girl in the green dress stopped inches from bopping the person on the head and sat down sulking. "Sorry Uzumaki san..." she muttered.
"S'okay. But don't bop guys on the head for asking questions, dattebayo," Naruto said with a frown. "It's not nice."
All eyes turned to glare at the girl and she pouted a bit. But Naruto walked up and stood right in front of the desks and waved his hands calling out, "Oi! We were talking about chakra nature stuff weren't we? Got any more questions?"
Shikamaru smirked a bit, not surprised by how well Naruto had the class in the palm of his hand. He walked up,rested a hand on the blonde's shoulder saying, "Who wants to know how the other natures look?"
Several dozen waving hands chorused, "I do!"
Hands still stuffed in his pockets Shikamaru said, "Electricity wrinkles up."
"What about earth?" a kid in a red shirt asked with a tight fitting cap.
"Crumbles away," Naruto chimed in "But water's kinda lame cause it just gets wet... dattebayo."
"Better not let a water user hear you say that," Shikamaru whispered smirking at the blonde who rubbed his cheek.
Seeing the gentle reproach in the Nara's eyes Naruto giggled. "Ehehe just kidding.”
Before Shikamaru or Naruto could ask if anyone else had any questions, a jangling bell broke the spell Naruto seemed to have on the class. Everyone burst out of their trance, grabbing and scrambling for their book bags.
“Before you go, your reports are due tomorrow!” Shikamaru called out. Why wasn't he bothered, the blonde wondered, at such wanton unruliness?
“Oi, wait!” Naruto shouted at the class. “Don't just rush off! What are you forgetting, dattebayo?”
Stopping in mid process, some students froze in place shoving books into their bags. Others were about to dart out the door. Yet long shadows crept up from the shadow nin's feet along the floor to each student. It wasn't just because Naruto had told them to quit, none of them could move.
“Shikamaru sensei!” a dozen voices whined.
“Naruto's right. What did I tell you to do before rushing out, like a bunch of troublesome deer?” the Nara asked, hands positioned in a sign Naruto knew very well.
Kagemane no jutsu to an entire class? Naruto's eyes widened in shock.
“Always bow and leave quietly sensei?” asked one.
“All right already we get it, Shikamaru sensei. We're sorry!” the girl in the green dress whined.
“I'm going to let you go, but bow and say thank you to Uzumaki Naruto for visiting and helping with the class,” Shikamaru lectured sternly.
Shadows released and each student turned to bow and chorus out their collective thanks. Still Naruto's blue eyes were round and huge. Once the class emptied out and they were alone down in front, he gaped at Shikamaru yelping, “Ehhh? You do that every class?”
Shikamaru chuckled. “It works. But they were so excited since you crashed my class you troublesome blonde that I had to remind them.”
Still stunned Naruto whispered, “A whole class?”
“Troublesome. Surely if I can hold down a ten tails I can stop an unruly class from bolting out of here like a bunch of animals,” Shikamaru answered, slipping his hands into his pockets. From his seat Iruka smiled a bit at Shikamaru, giving him a nod of approval.
“Have a good day, Shikamaru kun,” Iruka called. “And this time you're excused from the faculty meeting. Have fun catching up with an old friend.”
“What was that?” the Nara asked, surprised. Naruto watched his narrow eyes open wide this time.
“You heard me. I'll take over. Just get back here on Monday in time for class,” Iruka called, departing the class.
A smile formed on his lips as he left the two alone. Now if only they'd take an obvious hint. He had a copy nin waiting for him at home that he didn't want to disappoint, but would know why he was late today.
