Shortly after he saw Naruto run off with Shikamaru the academy instructor grabbed his case and waved goodbye to Teuchi and Ayame once again. Glimpsing between the distinctive buildings with their water towers on top and various apartments in strange places he saw the brilliant orange reds and yellows of a Konoha sunset.
Sometimes because of the unique chemistry between trees and the sky such sunsets were common to the Land of Fire, helping maintain reason for its name.
Iruka began his usual walk back towards his home. He felt in no particular hurry. After all Naruto was back and things would get a lot noisier at the mission table when he knew the blonde would start complaining about getting anything lower than A and S rank assignments. Knowing Tsunade, she would assign Naruto a B or C while Shizune would insist on a D rank mission.
Yes, it was going to get a lot noisier in Konoha. Iruka didn’t mind at all. Naruto was back home at long last. An empty spot in his life for 2½ years was now about to be filled once more. Inside his stomach, he felt the warm glow of fondness kindling. Not quite what Guy would call the ‘flames of youth’ but still it warranted a fire metaphor.
“Well you’re one happy shinobi, Iruka sensei,” commented a familiar voice from right beside him.
Now the academy instructor’s heart started to skip beats. Still he managed to hide his excitement glimpsing the masked copy ninja suddenly walking at his side. “Kakashi sensei, you’re right. Have you seen how much he’s grown?”
“Only a peek. I’m saving it for when I give him and Sakura a test once more tomorrow,” Kakashi answered, showing a crease of a smile under his visible left eye.
Iruka laughed and shook his head in the negative. “Not the bell test again, Kakashi. Haven’t they already learned enough from that?”
The once closed eye opened. “Why not? The method’s tried and true; I’m just going to put a new spin on it, Iruka.”
“I don’t know Kakashi. He looks and feels a great deal more grown up, not just because he put on a few inches of height but his chakra…”
They turned the corner where Iruka’s street bisected the main one, but kept on walking past his residence. Kakashi still looked straight ahead during their stroll. “I know you’re not a sensor but you are a reasonably good judge of chakra when you stand close enough to someone,”
“Which is one of the many reasons I’m an academy instructor in addition to my transforming abilities,” the academy instructor proudly added, tapping his hitai-ate with one finger.
Kakashi came to a dead stop and glanced around them. He cast Iruka a slightly confused glance murmuring, “Not your place this time?”
“Mine was last time, it’s your turn today,” Iruka reminded him, giving him a smile as he rested a hand on Kakashi’s arm.
“But we decided to alternate in sets of three? Three at my place, three at yours,” the copy ninja insisted, moving his finger to make an invisible tally.
Seizing the Jonin’s upper arm and tugging Iruka tossed his head in the direction of the building where Kakashi lived.
“No, you’re not getting out of it this time.”
“But your bathtub is smaller, which means…”
The academy instructor continued to half drag the copy ninja behind him, making sure nobody was watching their antics. “I need to return a few books to you. That makes it even.”
“Ulp, wait a moment,” Kakashi murmured, standing firmly so Iruka really had to pull to get him to budge. He grabbed Iruka’s hand and tugged him behind a building so they both pressed flat against the wall.
While Kakashi peered around the corner, the chunin gave him an awkward smile. “Whoops. Close call this time?”
“About three or four people close. Those two ladies always eat dango this time of the night at this week. Which we wouldn’t have to worry about going by your place Iruka.”
Glancing up at the sky beginning to darken enough to see a few stars Iruka sighed. “Don’t start with that again. I forgot to clean the kitchen and I’m not going to have you do it and cut into…”
A gloved hand clapping over Iruka’s mouth stopped his complaint while Kakashi tugged him close to his side. Irritated Iruka was about to struggle when he heard the sounds of people chattering. Figures that Kakashi would use an excuse to pull him into a secret embrace when public displays of affection could be distractions.
Chunins and Jonins could date, but sometimes being seen with the legendary copy ninja had its disadvantages.
Mischief twinkled in Iruka’s eyes. Slowly he parted his lips and ran his tongue along the palm pressed to his mouth. His other hand slid down and gave the copy ninja’s backside a slow pinch before it rose up and slipped down his pants waistband.
“Iruka,” Kakashi hissed under his breath, not surprised by the innocent look the instructor was giving him with those soft brown eyes.
“Mmmm,” Iruka answered licking Kakashi’s palm invitingly. Head pressed against Kakashi’s jonin vest he felt the warmth of the copy ninja very potently. There was something fun and forbidden about sneaking around like this.
Few people knew how deep the relationship between them ran. Further down Kakashi’s pants roamed Iruka’s hand so his fingers touched bare skin and pinched.
The fast snatch of an advanced body flicker next interrupted them. Iruka clung tightly to the jonin while they moved at a pace far greater than his chunin teaching allowed, but a subject he knew well enough about at the normal level. All shinobi knew this art, but only jonin and ANBU could take it to the next level and use it to move at a quicker speed and not just as a distraction technique.

Moments later Iruka and Kakashi held onto one another by arms around their respective waists. Kakashi reached to free the latch on his window and slide it open while Iruka stood on the side of the building and waited. The copy ninja hardly ever used doors in all the time that the academy instructor had known him.
“Well, come on in, Iruka kun,” Kakashi urged, letting the academy instructor step over the ledge. He dropped down into the small but neatly arranged apartment just next to where Kakashi had his bed. Promptly he sat down on the shuriken-patterned bedspread to wait for Kakashi to enter behind him.
Walls were lined with bookcases and a small plant sat on the windowsill. A door led to a private bathroom, and another doorway led to a kitchen alcove.
One of the first things Kakashi did besides removing his sandals was check around the apartment. He set down his pouch and other tools before removing his vest. Seated on the bed Iruka pulled off his own sandals and watched the jonin move about the apartment.
“You need to dust,” Iruka commented, hearing the clink of dishes on the counter and the sound of liquid being poured from one vessel to another.
“Anything else you notice, Sensei?” Kakashi said, sticking his head around the doorframe so Iruka could see him.
