Dozens of white clouds of various shapes loaded the sky overhead. Beneath it, Konoha enjoyed a quieter afternoon. It was a few days after he and Sakura had sat under that tree. Since then they had quietly gone about their business with friendly words but the atmosphere had changed little between them. Weary of the awkward tension the blonde jinchuriki sought other company. This brought him to Shikamaru’s favorite seat.
“What’s it like?” Naruto mumbled, sitting beneath an overhanging cover next to the other person seated on the bench.
“What do you mean what’s it like?” mumbled his companion. “Here I am inviting you to watch clouds and you’re asking troublesome questions.”
“I guess I said that aloud and didn’t realize it,” Naruto chuckled nervously, grinning and rubbing the back of his head.
Shikamaru knitted his brows and sighed. “Choji just ate potato chips with me when he joined me up here.”
Able to just glimpse the puffy white clouds from under the edge of the wood shading them Naruto asked, “Hey, you mean you and him…”
“Don’t tell me you don’t know that’s how he and I became best friends…” the shadow ninja confirmed, cutting him off, but that wide-eyed look on Naruto’s face indicated some other thought process.
“Troublesome,” Shikamaru grumbled, but did not chase Naruto away.
“Best friends huh?” Naruto mumbled. He had heard that lately from Sakura, and it hurt even more though he wanted her happiness above all. Tracing back a day or so in his mind, he could remember that kiss, and the bittersweet admission. She cared for him but was not in love with him.
“Best friends,” Shikamaru repeated, sitting up straighter from his usual slouch. “Hey, what’s with the glare? You haven’t said anything for the last five minutes and it’s troublesome.”
Naruto’s eyes popped out of a dull blue state at the same time his whole body snapped up so he sat on the edge of the bench. “Huh, what?”
“Troublesome,” Shikamaru sighed, waving a hand in front of his face. “Are you ok?”
“Oh yeah, sure! Sorry for spacing out, Shikamaru!” Naruto apologized.
Frowning the Nara let out another sigh. “Don’t apologize. If you won’t talk about it it’s no skin off my back, but you can at least try watching the clouds.”
“Don’t you usually do it lying down?” asked Naruto, kicking his feet back and forth as he did when he was 12.
“Yeah, but for two people to lie down on this bench at the same time is troublesome,” said Shikamaru shrugging.
The blonde jinchuriki screwed up his face to think. “Well you could um… lay down and I could still sit up.”
“Oh?” Shikamaru asked, cocking a brown eyebrow upwards.
“If I scooted to the edge you could still lay down a bit,” Naruto suggested.
“That’s not a bad idea,” the Nara said, turning around so his back faced Naruto. The blonde scooted down to the end of the bench but Shikamaru’s head and shoulders landed in his lap.
“Uh… Shikamaru…” Naruto stammered out, blushing.
“You’re right, this is a good idea. That’s much better,” Shikamaru said with a contented yawn as he lay back and made himself comfortable.
Nervously Naruto laughed, glancing down at the brunette shifting in his lap. He had not expected Shikamaru to put his head THERE of all places. Why did it make him so giddy and silly, like he did when he was around Sakura?
Not wanting to argue or displace his friend, Naruto just opted to try to relax. He stared up at the clouds like the shadow ninja was doing, focusing on them. It was boring, but at least it wasn’t heart wrenching. Before long, he started to see patterns in them, only to hear a gentle snore coming from the Nara. Seeing Shikamaru licking his lips in his sleep was equally disturbing to seeing Sakura do the same thing.
“Why am I thinking of Sakura and Shikamaru in the same way?” Naruto mumbled aloud.
At least Shikamaru did not punch him or freak out when he said something wrong. Granted he was used to that with Sakura, but it was refreshing not to be on edge. Plus Shikamaru didn’t mind him hanging around just being there whether he was bored or not. Sometimes the Nara even invited him to share BBQ with squad 10 with a lazy, “Well you might as well come before Choji eats all the food”.
Naruto enjoyed eating with squad 10. Ino was a good deal like Sakura but she focused more of her annoyance on keeping Choji and Shikamaru in line. He half wondered what was going on among the three of them since they seemed so closely knit but chalked it up to having a mind corrupted by his Pervy sage.
Come to think of it, he always ended up sitting next to Shikamaru. Ino sat across from him, next to Choji leaving Naruto to compete with the Akimichi for the meat. Ino ate the vegetables, but Shikamaru helped himself to both. Sometimes he even grabbed a few pieces to put onto Naruto’s plate before Choji could claim them.
Ino and Choji. It was clear to see that Choji liked her, and she seemed to enjoy spending time around him. Though Shikamaru was usually there. When he wasn’t he was spending time with Naruto and Choji, with Kiba added in for good measure like the old days. Lately when Naruto wasn’t with team 7 he spent more time just killing it with the lazy genius.
Another loud snore caused him to nearly jolt back once more. Shikamaru still slept but his mouth was open the slightest bit. Why did Naruto look so intently at those lips? It seemed nuts, but he remembered looking at Sasuke and Sakura when asleep. Back when he trained with his pervy sage they spent time around the brothels doing ‘research’ as a break from training. Naruto had been urged to try mastering the art of the bedroom a few times. Since he was lonely, he took the old sage up on his generous gift and spent a few times here and there.
Even with males as well as females, something Jiraya said was a bit freaky, but not sick. Jiraya loved women that’s true, but he said there were ninjas who liked men. Naruto usually called them fruits.
Conflicting thoughts rose in his mind. He loved Sakura yes, but he also desired Sasuke. Desired them both. Neither was inside his reach. What was it like? He had kissed Sasuke twice, and those hired people that provided company. Now he had tasted Sakura’s lips. They were sweet but tainted from lack of love. Whom else could he kiss around here who wouldn’t punch him?
Hinata was too shy. She would just faint and cause Kiba to pick a fight with him. Ino was out of the question and Tenten… well let’s just say that either Lee or Neji would object to that! Most girls may in fact give him a knuckle sandwich. So that left some willing guy who didn’t mind falling to the ‘fruity’ side of experimentation.
It wasn’t a guy/guy thing, Naruto insisted. Just research. Since Shikamaru was there practically haven fallen in his lap, Naruto saw no harm in at least trying out a kiss on him. The worse that could happen was Shikamaru could shove him away and yell, “Troublesome’ at him or sic Ino on him.
Shrugging, Naruto bent his head down only to stop inches from Shikamaru’s parted lips.
Inside his chest, his heart pounded and skipped beats. He closed his eyes after he moved his mouth over Shikamaru’s. Instead of someone pushing him away, he only felt a slight exhalation on his closed lips. A jolt of electricity seemed to shoot through Naruto. Pulling back, he realized the taste was far from unpleasant so he leaned down to kiss Shikamaru again.
This time he angled his head to the side and slipped his tongue the slightest bit forward through the open mouth. Success. Shikamaru’s mouth opened a fraction more, sufficient to have a taste. Naruto grew bolder, thrusting his tongue into the Nara’s mouth eagerly. Against his tongue, Shikamaru’s glided deftly. Wait a minute, the Nara was responding in his sleep?
“Mmm,’ Naruto groaned in bliss at the kiss deepening. It felt so good.
Too bad he had to breathe after he pulled back and shivered. Shikamaru licked his lips, brown eyes opening to look up at Naruto in irritation. Before the blonde-haired person could leap up, a hand grasped the front of his jacket.
“I didn’t mean…” Naruto stammered, white eyed.
“Troublesome blonde, why did you stop?” Shikamaru said.
“WHAAAAT?” Naruto yelped, almost leaping up. He wasn’t sure if he was scared at Shikamaru’s nonchalance or the fact he actually enjoyed kissing Shikamaru far more than Sakura.
“You’re too loud,” Shikamaru grumbled, cleaning out his ear with one finger. He sat up before Naruto could knock him off his lap. Like a frightened deer, Naruto leapt up to bolt except Shikamaru formed a familiar sign.
“Shadow possession jutsu!” the Nara chanted, snaring Naruto where he was.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry okay!” Naruto blurted out, eyes white. He couldn’t move any part of his body thanks to the Nara’s jutsu.
“Naruto, sit down and calm down will you? Stop acting so panicked and troublesome!” Shikamaru grumbled, glaring at him. “Why are you so surprised that I enjoyed it? Because I’m a guy?”
“Uh yeah…” Naruto stammered. “I’m not a f… frui…”
“You mean gay, or homosexual,” Shikamaru sighed. “Just say it all right? And who said you had to be one or the other? People can be bi…”
Eyes still white Naruto couldn’t keep from babbling, “It’s just… I didn’t expect you… me to…”
“I wondered how long it would take you to do it anyway,” Shikamaru smirked, still holding Naruto in a shadow possession jutsu. He sat down at the same time compelling Naruto to sit down and bend close. Both lifted their hands to one another’s faces.
Snared by the shadow possession jutsu Naruto bent his head to the side just like Shikamaru and fused his lips with the Nara’s. This time the shadow ninja’s manipulations guided Naruto in a way that he’d most likely have figured out anyway. From the Nara’s throat came a contented moan desiring more. Simultaneously one hand slid into the hair of the other, rubbing the scalp while the opposite hand rubbed up and down one another’s chests.
Naruto felt pulled back for a breath, gasping at the Nara whose eyes were half closed.
Just the hint of a smirk twitched his lips. “Shika… maru…”
“Now do I have to keep using this troublesome jutsu to convince you I don’t mind?” Shikamaru grumbled.
“I know it weakens after five minutes,” Naruto chuckled, feeling the shadows already retreat. Arms wrapping around Naruto’s waist, the Nara heir linked his fingers at the small of the blonde’s back.
“Good, then don’t run away this time? It’s troublesome enough chasing the deer without having to go after you,” Shikamaru scolded. “So stop looking like one of them getting a light shined in their eyes?”
Feeling Shikamaru’s hand caressing his whisker-scarred cheek the jinchiruki said, “I thought you wanted to get married and have a daughter and then a son.”
“That WAS the plan, but sometimes biology has a way of screwing us over,” Shikamaru said shrugging after he bent in for another kiss.
Naruto’s face flushed red as he tried to catch his breath. He placed his hands right on Shikamaru’s shoulders where they felt most comfortable. “So ah… then you… want to ah date…”
Smirking a bit, Shikamaru touched his forehead to Naruto’s. “There’s no hard and fast rule. I just want to spend time with you, that’s all.”
“I ah… ah… this is new…” Naruto chuckled, finding he liked the feel of the Nara’s arms holding him in a warm possessive embrace. That way Shikamaru’s dark eyes searched his almost caused his heart to ache.
“I’ve liked you for a long time, Uzumaki Naruto. I’m just sorry if you don’t feel the same way,” began the shadow ninja, releasing his grasp.
Feeling that familiar pang of regret he was sure Sakura must feel Naruto could not stand to see anyone else denied a fair chance. It was all so quick to him but he could not allow Shikamaru to feel the same disappointment and bitterness of a dead end. The tingling lips and shivering skin told him this could lead to something far more interesting and promising then holding onto unrequited love for Sakura.
“Shika, don’t say it! I’m not sure how I feel about you, but I like you and I want to find out. So gimmie a chance ok?” the jinchuriki called out, grabbing Shikamaru by the upper arms. Surprised, the Nara heir remained quiet but his eyes were as wide as Sakura’s were before the kiss.
“Then you…” After that, Naruto pulled him in for a kiss in the same way he did for Sakura, though his feelings were hardly clear. It was a want and a need to be there for someone else and give him or her some way, somehow to express something formless.
Under his mouth, Shikamaru’s lips parted allowing the tongue to slip against Naruto’s. A warm hum of pleasure erupted from the Nara’s throat into the jinchuriki’s mouth. The noise of contentment at a dream being filled in reality, which tugged at Naruto’s heartstrings. Angling his head to the side the blonde shinobi allowed his companion to dominate the kiss he instigated. Warmth like a fire rushed hotly through his body with the force of a bolt of lightning like Sasuke’s chidori.
“Mmm,” Naruto hummed in pleasure after the kiss broke. He found himself rubbing his cheeks to Shikamaru’s out of instinct. It felt so good.
“Yeah,” the Nara panted.
“What do we do now?” Naruto asked nervously. “Go on a date?”
“If you want to, but if it’s too trouble…”
Grasping for some idea the blonde jinchuriki reached for something in his pocket with one hand not holding onto the Nara. “It’s not. Want to go to Ichiraku Ramen with me? They’re having a discount night and I have a coupon…”
Seeing the colorful piece of paper waved in his face Shikamaru seized it with one hand. “All right, let’s go.”
