Ifix wandered in the general direction of the bars and public areas of the massive starbase. It never occurred to her before how something as simple as a being's normally fixed gender could influence civility. Of course extraordinary events cause extraordinary results, like when beings change their gender upon copulation, and have substance abuse ( Read more... )

I find myself perplexed trying to communicate with these people as well.

That's because you keep asking for chocolate in 57 different languages. If people don't have their Universal Translators on, you sound like you're talking gibberish. If they do, it sounds stupid. "Chocolate? Chocolate? Chocolate?" Storvik, the monomaniacal three year old...

Some people can swear in 57 languages. I learned how to ask for chocolate in 57 languages. I feel that it is less offensive.

Chocolate: BAD, Mmmm: GOOD. Soup. Art. ifix September 3 2003, 17:58:14 UTC
Some study is warranted here. The phonogram of "chocolate" appears in some ancient Hurrrg texts. It means "evil, addictive substance." Strangely, the stuff that humans call "chocolate" has lexigraphic roots in the phoneme "mmmm" which appears to be the universal sound for "yummy."

Stranger still, human chocolate is poisonous to modern Hurrrg in larger quantities.

More evidence of cross-cultural contamination. As a side note: the Hurrrg word for "modern art" is similar to the the human name "Gilda Warhol." Go figure.

Oh, but swearing in that many languages is useful. Asking for Chocolate is not, chocolate shouldn't be asked for, it should be aquired by any means needed when a female wants it. Anyone who doens't understand that should die a slow and painful death... or at least be tortured 'til the chocolate is discovered.

So, what you're saying is that I should learn how to offer and provide chocolate in 57 languages?

Well, it's either learn to do that in ~every~ language in the universe, or learn the universal gleam in a female's eye so you don't even have to say a word. I'd suggest the latter, since it requires less work, but usually is more effective than butchering a language because you've only encountered it in a text book.
